Today we’d like to introduce you to Vonda Malbrough.
Hi Vonda, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey in the nonprofit sector began over two decades ago, right here in the vibrant metro Atlanta community. My goal was simple yet profound: to become a community advocate, a voice, and a force for positive change. This ambition led me to my initial role with the Girl Scouts organization, an experience that was both enriching and transformative. It was here that my passion for service and advocacy truly took root and began to expand.
Over the years, my career path has woven through various sectors, each contributing to my growth and understanding of community needs. I’ve had the privilege of working in health and human services, healthcare, collegiate education, and public safety. These diverse experiences have provided me with a comprehensive view of community dynamics and the multifaceted nature of service.
Today, I find myself working in the technology space as the Senior Director of Community Impact at Compudopt’s Atlanta office. This role allows me to converge my previous experience with the pressing need for digital equity. Compudopt is a nonprofit committed to serving youth and communities in the metro Atlanta area, focusing on bridging the digital divide and ensuring equitable access to technology.
Each step of my journey has been guided by a steadfast commitment to community service, and I am grateful for the opportunities and challenges that have shaped my path. I am excited to continue making a meaningful impact in the lives of those we serve at Compudopt.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Responding to the question of whether my journey has been smooth, I would say it has not been without its challenges, but it has indeed been a rewarding and enlightening journey. The path of working in the nonprofit sector, especially in community service, comes with a unique set of struggles and learning curves.
One of the primary challenges faced in this field is funding and awareness. It’s a continuous effort to help potential supporters and the broader community understand the critical need for their support, whether financial or in-kind. Without this support, fulfilling our mission would be significantly more challenging. It’s a delicate balance of showcasing the impact of our work while continuously advocating for the resources needed to sustain and expand our services.
Malcolm Gladwell’s words resonate deeply with my experiences: “If there were no difficulties, there would be no success; if there were nothing to struggle for, there would be nothing to be achieved.” This perspective has been a guiding light through various challenges. The struggles I have faced within my career are not just obstacles but opportunities to innovate, grow, and redefine the approach to making a tangible difference.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am the Senior Director of Community Impact at Compudopt, a nonprofit with the mission is to provide technology access and education to under-resourced youth and their communities. My role is pivotal in representing and advancing this mission. I see myself as the face of the organization here in Atlanta, embodying our values and goals in every interaction and initiative.
Compudopt, nationally based and originally founded in Houston, Texas, recognized a vital need for digital equity, leading to the opening of the Atlanta site nearly two years ago. We are not the only organization working toward this initiative in Metro Atlanta, but our approach is collaborative, and we spread awareness and support through our unique programming.
In terms of specialization, Compudopt focuses on bridging the digital divide. We do this not only by providing devices but also through educational programs that equip individuals with the necessary digital skills to thrive in today’s technologically driven world. Our initiatives are designed to create lasting impact and foster digital inclusivity and literacy.
What sets Compudopt apart is our deep understanding of community needs and our agile response to them. We don’t just distribute technology; we ensure it serves as a powerful tool for empowerment and opportunity.
Personally, I am known for being a change agent. This work is more than a job; it’s a passion. The immediate rewards are not always visible, but the impact is profound. I take pride in the responses from parents who express gratitude for the devices we provide and from site directors who appreciate our presence in their schools. These responses are a testament to the difference we make.
What I am most proud of is the tangible change we see in communities. When a student can complete their homework at home, a parent can search for a job online, or a community leader can access resources to better serve their community, we know our efforts are making a real difference. This is what drives me and sets our work at Compudopt apart.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Responding to the question about resources that help me excel in both my professional and personal life, I must say that while work occupies a significant part of my time, the most influential factor that enables me to do my best is the unwavering support of my family. Their understanding and backing, particularly during late nights, missed family events, and even their willingness to volunteer their time is invaluable. This support system provides me with the strength and motivation to continue making a difference through my work.
Additionally, the camaraderie and shared experiences with other nonprofit professionals play a crucial role. Being in a space with individuals who not only understand but also deeply appreciate the value we bring to the community is incredibly empowering. These interactions and exchanges, whether formal or informal, provide a source of inspiration, new ideas, and a sense of solidarity that fuels my commitment to our mission.
While there are undoubtedly various apps, books, podcasts, and blogs that offer insights and guidance, I find the most profound resources to be the human connections and support systems around me. This is what reminds me of the impact of my work and keeps me grounded in my purpose.
