Life & Work with Wayne Thornton of Decatur

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wayne Thornton.

Hi Wayne, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been a musician and drummer for over 20 years. I started playing drums in church as a kid, and over time, that passion grew into a full career. I went to school for music and eventually began touring and working with major artists like Tyler Perry, 2Chainz, Monica, Tamar Braxton, and Musiq Soulchild, just to name a few. I’ve been blessed to perform across the U.S. and internationally, and I’ve also appeared on Netflix and in music documentaries.

Now, I’m building my own company called Lil Foot Productionz — a full-service music production company offering live performance services, studio sessions, backlining, and gear for artists and events. It’s named after the idea that even small steps can grow into something big. My journey hasn’t always been easy — I’ve faced homelessness, financial struggles, and personal losses — but I’ve stayed grounded in faith and music.

Today, I’m focused on building a legacy through music, helping other artists shine, and using my gifts to inspire and give back to my community.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not a smooth road — but I think the struggle helped shape the story. I’ve dealt with a lot, from financial instability to being homeless at times, especially during the pandemic. Trying to maintain a career in music while navigating life’s setbacks, family responsibilities, and even mental health battles has been tough.

There were moments where I questioned everything — my purpose, my path, even my talent. It’s hard when you give your all to something and still feel overlooked or stuck. But through it all, I leaned on my faith, kept creating, and stayed ready for the opportunities that came. I learned to move in faith, even when I couldn’t see the full picture.

What’s kept me going is knowing that what I do — whether it’s playing drums, producing, or mentoring others — actually impacts people. That reminder helped me push through the hardest seasons.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a professional drummer, producer, and founder of Lil Foot Productionz. I specialize in live performance, studio recording, playback, and building full musical experiences for artists and events. I’ve worked with some incredible names in the industry like Tyler Perry, 2Chainz, Monica, Musiq Soulchild, and Tamar Braxton — but honestly, I take just as much pride in working with local talent and helping bring their visions to life.

What I’m most proud of is building Lil Foot Productionz from the ground up. It’s not just a company — it’s a movement. We provide everything from live instrumentation to studio gear, backline support, and even mentorship for up-and-coming musicians. It’s about creating a space where music can thrive, even when resources are limited.

What sets me apart is the heart behind the work. I don’t just play drums or produce tracks — I bring soul, experience, and a genuine passion for excellence into every project. I’ve been in rooms big and small, and I treat every moment like it matters — because it does.

How do you think about happiness?
Spending time with my children. Touring. Traveling the world. Seeing my family and friends on the road. Being in the studio. Bringing thoughts and ideas to life. Catching flights. I love trail mix!! Walks in nature bring a lot of joy too. Tuning into my church live stream because they vibe!

Why? I guess it’s just my process to stay creative and mentally stable.
