Life & Work with Wilson McKay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wilson McKay.

Hi Wilson, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
To start I have always had a deep fascination with music since I was young. At the age of 13, I picked up the guitar and my dad taught me the basics, and I never really stopped. I played in a band called Organized Chaos after high school for a bit until I moved to Georgia. We never really did much with it but it was fun to play music with friends.

After moving to Georgia in 2008 to seek out more life opportunities than rural Indiana could provide I started learning how to produce electronic music in 2011. It’s been a constant learning experience the whole time. In late 2021 I decided to get more involved in the Drum and Bass scene here in Atlanta after attending a few shows post COVID 19 lockdown. This is where I met Seth Hoover aka “Kaf” a colleague and business partner of mine. He put out a call for local producers to be a part of a compilation album showcasing local DnB producers here in Atlanta. I responded and submitted a song that made the cut.

While helping to promote the release party for the album I met my now-current manager Scott Steiner who gave me a chance to DJ one of his silent disco events he does around town. We hit it off pretty well and became friends. Over the past year, I have been honing my sound and working to push the genre of music here in the southeast. Being myself, having a positive attitude, learning new things, and being kind to others got me where I am today.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have been many struggles over the early years. Life throws a lot at you to slow you down. That’s why I started this journey at 34. Music producers and DJs have a lot of financial demands. When I was in my 20s, I had to sell my equipment to keep the lights on, which set me back a lot. However, the struggle I went through then made me who I am today. There was a time for this, and I think now is that time.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
That’s a tough one. I make electronic music and DJ. I specialize in a few genres, mainly Drum and Bass, and Dubstep. I would say I am known for being genuine. Whether that is invoking an emotion via a DJ set or an original song. I really pour my heart into the music, and it shows.

I am most proud of having my music released on record labels and blogs such as Beet Ranch, Lost Space Records, and All 172 Things. I am also proud of the progress I have made in my first year of actually pursuing a career in music.

I can only guess what sets me apart from others is my work ethic in some way. I work a full-time construction job and put in another 20-30 hours a week for my music. Whether that is writing, DJing, promoting, or creating media for my promotional needs.
