Today we’d like to introduce you to Winnie Su.
Hi Winnie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a freelance photographer currently based in the New York City area. Besides working on portraits, products, events, and other commissioned photography projects, I focus on discovering, capturing, and presenting the details of our daily lives in analog form. The delicate texture, the subtle emotion, and the fleeting moments, all these inconspicuous scraps interest me. I enjoy how the unique quality of analog approaches, such as shooting with film or doing alternative printing processes, stands out to me. The elegancy and the time-consuming nature are some of the reasons I insist in working with the medium.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’d say yes and no. Digital photography is the norm of my generation. With the decrease of people working with film and other analog approaches, the higher the price gets and the more challenging in learning the tradition. Yet the difficulties and inconveniences of the medium definitely cost me more to pursue the work I desire, I am passionate and feel fortunate to do the work I do.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’ve photographed a wide range of subjects, from cities to nature, from still lives to motions, and so much more. But ultimately, I’m capturing the intriguing movements and moments I encounter in my life. People often feel my work is relatable because of the subjects I tend to focus on and the concept I try to convey. Working with paper-based mediums, such as making alternative prints and handmade photo books, also adds a sense of delicacy and steadiness to my practice. These factors are relevant in setting my work apart from others.
Photography is not something I only do on purpose; it is my lifestyle. I always try to bring a camera with me; where ever I go and whenever I go. There is always another person to photograph, another place to visit. And I am always on that journey.
How do you define success?
My definition of success is pretty broad. Any achievement or compliment can be a success for me. Even a sense of satisfaction at the end of each day is success too. The most important thing is to live happily, live the way you like, and that is success.
