Life & Work with Yushan Chang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yushan Chang.

Yushan Chang

Hi Yushan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m Yushan, hailing from Taiwan. Previously, I worked as a motion graphics designer at EP+CO in South Carolina, and now I’m a freelance motion graphics designer. I’m delighted to share my story with all of you today. During my college years, my major wasn’t in design. It was during the summer break of my freshman year that I first encountered design software and developed an interest in it. I initially studied knowledge related to graphic design. In the following years, I continued to take courses related to design. After graduating, I had the opportunity to spend some time in the United States, which sparked my interest in pursuing further education abroad. With the support of my family, I began my graduate program at SCAD in 2016. I was fortunate to join EP+CO as a motion graphics designer after graduating, where I had the privilege of collaborating with many talented colleagues, which was a valuable experience.

I am truly grateful to my family, friends I’ve met along the way, colleagues, supervisors, and partners for their support, which has shaped me into the person I am today.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Because my undergraduate major wasn’t in a design-related field, I spent some time taking additional courses and learning when applying for graduate school. It was a feeling of resetting and starting anew, and I had moments of hesitation. In fact, many people who change their career paths have concerns that don’t emerge overnight. They accumulate over time in daily life. Later on, I came to understand the saying that courage isn’t the absence of fear but the choice to move forward despite it. Looking back, the time that seemed like going in circles initially has turned out to be a valuable experience.

In the past few years, due to the pandemic, the work model at the company shifted from office-based to remote work. I actually enjoyed the daily life in the office with colleagues. It took some time to adapt to the transition initially, with the loss of everyday coffee chats and the addition of more time for personal reflection and learning. Many colleagues have also left the company in these years, and there’s a feeling of nostalgia for the times when we didn’t expect that a casual cup of coffee might be our last moment chatting in the office.

Life is filled with uncertainties, and many people choose not to make changes because of their fear of the unknown. However, the past few years of the pandemic have taught us that Dreams can’t wait. You never know which will come first: your tomorrow or your end. In that case, it’s better to cherish what we can do in the present and bravely attempt to accomplish the things we desire. The path may not always be smooth, but if we persist, there will be a day when we reach our destination.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
For me, motion graphics design is a form of communication and expression. I have a deep interest in advertising and design. During my studies, I came across many touching and thought-provoking advertisements. In fact, most designs carry the intentions of the designer and the message they aim to convey. Every clever idea is found in the details.

I enjoy conveying stories and messages in my work, simplifying complexity to make it easier for people to grasp the intended meaning more quickly. I personally like to combine graphic design with animation to present my creations.
I hope that the world can feel some warmth from my creations and works.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
Overall, I really enjoy parks and botanical gardens in the city. These places are relaxing, and I often go for walks in the mountains and by the lakes. I love the natural beauty of South Carolina and Georgia, with their diverse landscapes. I also enjoy watching people on holidays sitting on the grass, having picnics, chatting, and taking leisurely walks.

Despite seeing many beautiful landscapes, the most beautiful of all is the encounters with people.
