Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaliyah Copeland.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Aaliyah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always wanted to be in media – went from thinking about broadcast to public relations and then on to marketing and branding. My internships began in athletic marketing but it was during the most God-willed internship that I found my purpose. I received a summer internship at truTV through the T.
Howard Foundation in New York City in 2016. I was working in Consumer Marketing during a rebrand and it opened my eyes to the magic of television and how it affects the culture and lifestyles of consumers. Post-graduation, I worked in advertising at an amazing agency. Knowing it was time for a change, the opportunity I’d been wanting presented itself and I ended up at Cartoon Network.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
NO! “Nobody told me the road would be easy, but I don’t believe He’s brought me this far to leave me.” That is the best way to summarize my career journey. I had a pretty successful college career by most standards and graduated without a job. Post-grad depression is REAL and it hit me like a ton of bricks. I knew where I wanted to be but couldn’t get there and I had to humble myself quickly.
Everything comes in due time. When I finally landed my first full-time position, I was happy, I was blessed, I was grateful but it came with its own set of issues. Was the experience and learning worth it? ABSOLUTELY. It was hard to bring myself to the point of transition in looking for another opportunity because I was comfortable – that’s a struggle within itself. Knowing my purpose and what I wanted to do helped me through that.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I work in Consumer Marketing at Cartoon Network. I’m super proud of us being a childhood memory for millennials and a standout entertainment choice for new generations. It’s amazing to be apart of brands that have such a meaningful place in people’s lives and continue to be a beacon of positivity for kids and adults alike.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Absolutely. No one gets anywhere alone and if they say they did, RUN. My mentors play a huge part in how I chase my dreams and handle business. Chloe Duverge (@MsChloeElle), literally a God-send, taught me to always be graceful, work so hard that opportunities come to you and that patience is a virtue- everything for you will come in due time. Then there’s Dominique (@DominiqueDaDiva) , who taught me to have fun no matter what I’m doing but make sure I know to never take business personally. Those two have shaped my professional career and brand more than they know. So grateful.
