Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Dews.
Aaron, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Music has definitely been the consistent core of my life. I was born in Music City (Nashville) and lived in Atl for about ten years in a musical household. Also, my pop is a TV and Film Composer/Producer, so he played a huge part as to why I started dancing, producing, and eventually rapping. Living in Atlanta monumentally shaped me as creative.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not. Most struggles were internal, which I feel most creatives can relate to. I didn’t grow up in a rough area and I had a very healthy upbringing, I’m very introspective and that has benefited me and been a detriment as well. One of the biggest struggles was when I moved to a predominantly Caucasian neighboorhood, where I encountered a lot of ignorance and racial identity issues. This was a pretty lonely time, but I was able to learn myself and configure my feelings and faith through the music.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m a hip-hop artist with many facets. I specialize in rap but it doesn’t really stop there. I’ve produced 90% of my catalog from conceptualization to the beat to the videos. What I’m really proud of is that I believe I have a lot to offer as an artist/business. I provide vocals for artists, along with, design, photography, and music production. Most of the services artists have to outsource for, I try to do myself at a high level. When it comes down to the content of art, I’m an advocate for substance and depth. While I love sonics, I appreciate storytelling, reminiscent of poetry, over just a good sounding sound. This ideology is driven by a personal conviction of mine that all gifts should honor the Giver.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Transparency. I try to be as honest as possible when I write. I believe my candidness is what attracts people to my music. For me, music has been medium used to escape or relate, and I try to fill in that space where the listener can relate to me.
