Meet Adina Leifer of Able Pelvic Physical Therapy in Sandy Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adina Leifer.

Adina, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a physical therapist that specializes in pelvic physical therapy. Pelvic physical therapy is the treatment of pelvic muscle dysfunction; urinary incontinence, Fecal incontinence, constipation, Prolapse, pelvic pain and sexual dysfunction.

Pelvic physical therapy has been and is currently my passion for the past 8 years. I graduated with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Touro College, NYC in 2007. I began working as an orthopedic physical therapist, as I practiced, I became more interested in the field of Women’s health. This began my journey into the physical therapy world of pelvic health. After receiving all the appropriate coursework through the Herman and Wallace Pelvic Rehabilitation Institute, I became the program director of a pelvic health center in Norwalk, CT. There, I worked closely with a team of physicians to create a center that patients can go to have treatment for their pelvic diagnoses. What began as a journey of Women’s health has blossomed into the full treatment of all pelvic floor dysfunctions for both Men and Women.

I moved to Atlanta 2 years ago with my family; husband and 4 young boys We have grown to love Atlanta and enjoy the suburban life. I started my own practice here in Sandy Springs and have enjoyed getting to know the wonderful patients and surrounding physician practices.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting a new private practice has its challenges, overall it has been a wonderful experience. One of the greatest challenges that I face is properly educating patients and physicians about the importance and benefit of pelvic physical therapy. People tend to not speak about urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence or sexual dysfunction with their friends and physicians, therefore they may not know all the different treatment options.

So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Able Pelvic Physical Therapy story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a physical therapy practice that specializes in pelvic physical therapy. We treat men and women with any pelvic floor muscle dysfunction. The pelvic muscles support the organ functions of the bladder, bowel and sexual functioning. These muscles can become too weak, causing incontinence or they can be too tight, causing pain, sexual dysfunction and constipation. We provide our patients with a one to one private session for 1 hour. Utilizing manual therapy, therapeutic exercises and biofeedback to educate patients how to properly use and strengthen these muscles.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I currently lease office space in the office of Dr. Caroline Abruzese. She is a concierge general practitioner at Personalized Healthcare. I found this space through pure luck…coincidence…maybe some other force of nature. I was on a committee for my local synagogue and at every meeting I would sit next to this lovely woman who I had not known prior to being on this committee. One day we got to talking and I mentioned that I was thinking about starting my own practice, she said she sees an amazing doctor who might have some office space to rent. and the rest is history…
