Today we’d like to introduce you to Akshay Thomas.
Hi Akshay, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
From a young age, I was fascinated with how movies were made. Films like Lord of the Rings and Star Wars captured my imagination through their behind-the-scenes featurettes on DVD extras. When I was 10 years old my dad let me borrow his old VHS-C home movie camera. From there I developed this need to tell stories. I started by making simple Lego stop motions and then moved on to making shorts with my friends and theater kids up through high school. After that, I received my bachelor’s in film production at the University of North Georgia, which finally leads me to today. This year I officially started my own videography company: Andromeda Films LLC.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Pursuing film has always been a challenge. There isn’t a singular path laid out for you to become a filmmaker. So, it took a lot of trial and error paired with learning experiences to get to where I am now. But I’m glad I get to face new challenges every day because every experience I get helps me become a better filmmaker.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Videographer that specializes in Directing, Cinematography, and Editing. When it comes to productions, I offer everything from pre-production through post-release content for the projects I work on. Currently, I’m most known for producing music videos for upcoming artists in the Atlanta and Athens music scenes. I’m also working my way into producing commercial work as well for local businesses.
I think what I’m most proud of would be the amazing crews I get to work with. We create safe set environments through PPE and by having fully vaccinated crews.
We also put a lot of planning into each shoot we do and make sure our clients have a good understanding of what the final project will look like. Because I am an editor as well, I like to go into shoots with an edit in mind and work to be as efficient as possible to achieve that edit.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I consume A LOT of podcasts. They get me through my best and worst days. For filmmakers, I’d highly recommend the Learn Videography, Film Riot, and The Cinematography podcast. For entertainment news and discussions, I like listing to Podcast Beyond, A24, Next Best Picture Show, and the Friendship Onion podcast as well.
