Meet Alex Cherry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Cherry.

Hi Alex, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Alex Cherry and I am the founder of Novice Principles. A big fan of music and an avid reader. I’m also largely into architecture. Really anything that stimulates my mind helps my creativity flourish.

Novice Principles is an independent publication centered on emerging artists & present-day storytelling in Hip-Hop. My focus has always been to tell the stories of talented upcoming artists and narrate about all going on in music today. We interview talented musicians from all across the country through our series “Novice Talk.” You’ll also witness album reviews, concert reviews and editorials like a story about the power of women in music, just to give you some insight into how far we stretch. Unique stories that are worth telling. Playlist Curation is very prevalent for NP and is popular amongst our growing audience. This variety and the quality of it is what separates us from others.

We launched in January of 2021 but have made so much progress since and that is what I’m most proud of. I am still learning and growing in my journey with our brand but it has been amazing to see what we’ve done such as major artists and their teams shouting us out on social media, topping over 2,000 views on our website and much more. I am beginning to see the relevance of Novice come into play with the music scene and I am thankful for that. Many artists and their teams are now seeking us out to do features and be a part of their rollouts; That’s amazing to me. I’ve also been writing for another media outlet (Swidlife) which has been major in building connections. Mally and the whole Swidlife team are family now.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road hasn’t been smooth by any means. I dealt with personal issues last year that got in the way of writing and there was a time where I went on hiatus because I didn’t have any creative juice in me. The feeling of being un-inspired isn’t a good one but over time I was able to get back in my groove and I’m grateful for that. Taking the necessary rest when “burnout” occurs is important. I’ve also learned that everyone’s path is different and all you can do is follow your process because it’s unique to your story.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Music Journalist. I find creative ways to promote upcoming artists and their music. Novice Principles is an emerging digital publication in the music space and I am very proud of the progress we’ve made thus far. I am also proud of myself for never giving up and being consistent with my work. We’re becoming known for our stellar interviews, album reviews and thought-provoking articles. We also deliver stunning visuals which have been vital to our growth. I’m not one-dimensional which separates me from many. Being able to narrate musician’s stories with my pen but also tell them very well through interviewing and asking distinct questions. Versatility is a defining characteristic. My passion for this has been the driving force in where we are as a brand today and where we will be going.

Any big plans?
I honestly want Novice to just keep building. The 4th quarter will be filled with more interviews and playlists. I will also be conducting our year-end wrap up where we discuss the year in music with great guests. It is a privilege to be able to narrate emerging artists’ stories and tell them to the world through interviews and write-ups. The name recognition isn’t important to me but it is my goal for NP to be a publication everyone flocks to for the latest reads, artist interviews and playlist curation. There’s no limit to where we can take this as long as we stay consistent.
