Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Kiker.
Alex, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Born in Odesa, Ukraine and adopted, I came to the United States when I was three and grew up in Mobile, AL. At a young age, I don’t think I would have ever known that videography/photography would get me to where I am today. I started out filming and creating videos with just an iPod 4G with my cousins who lived nearby. From there I let the curiosity and fascination of being able to create a video take me to new places and new ideas. I created music videos and commercials for local businesses all throughout high school. It wasn’t up until after I graduated high school when I was working a retail job for a year that I knew I wanted to pursue videography full time. So I quit that retail position and full heartedly pursued videography. I didn’t know how this decision would affect me but I knew I needed to make a change.
The next couple of months gave me a valuable lesson: Being creative will only get you so far, the other component you need to learn is hard work.
After seeing and sharing a viral video I created, AL.COM a statewide media company took interest. That video was a mockup video to the song “Another Day of Sun” from the movie LA LA LAND I created with my alma mater, Mary G. Montgomery High School. This has been a yearly collaboration we have done for the past three years. Our most recent video “The Greatest School” is standing at 2.6 million views. All of these videos filmed entirely with Apple iPhones. After the video was shared, I was interviewed and quickly moved up to Birmingham, AL where I would begin working with a media company that I still work at today.
Working today, I only look to better my skills and create compelling videos that people can enjoy. Keeping in mind my faith and the love I have for Christ. I hear a lot of people say the only thing that is preventing them from creating is an ideal camera, a camera lens or the right professional gear. This stops a lot of people and it shouldn’t. It should be a sign to try to create around that barrier and make it happen. That’s where being creative comes in and if you have to make something with just an iPod figure out a way to make it your own.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Personally, I have dealt with a lot of doubt and anxiety along the way. It has been something that started at a young age and carries into my work that I make even today.
I believe in a sense we all have struggles along the way that test in different areas. I think if it were a smooth road, then it wouldn’t be much of an interesting story.
Please tell us about Alex Kiker.
I am a videographer and a photographer along with having an interest in motion graphics. As a business, I specialize in creating commercial films for businesses, brands and individual people.
I am known for creating music videos in my town that have since in the past gone viral regionally.
I most proud of the love and grace I have received from Christ. I believe without his unending love and being able to look up to him when I am struggling has been a great rock for me to lean on in tough times.
I believe what sets me apart from others is when I approach a client to not only tell the most authentic story I can but to never forget to make it fun. People like when you make something that they can resonate with outside the fact that you are making a promotional film for a business.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood was getting to get outside almost everyday and just getting to play a game of basketball with my cousins. When you get older things can get complicated and you move away and playing a simple game of basketball becomes not as common.
