Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Simmons.
Alex, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I love to find ways to make things work more efficiently and effectively, so that is really how this started… out of a passion for business.
I studied business in college and when I graduated I started working with a small, startup company. We were a music store that taught private lessons, mostly to school aged kids. While I worked to develop relationships with our local schools, I learned that we could offer an after school music program as an enrichment course. Now we did not need to get the kids to come to our store from the school, we took the music lessons to them! I developed an after school string program that would ultimately become the new face and focus for growth of this small company.
During this whole period, I was going through some tough personal times as well. My father, who was my mentor and business partner, was dying of cancer. I had to watch the disease slowly eat away at him, and it truly changed me forever. I became obsessed with getting healthier. I was going to eat right, exercise, and take care of my body.
As my health and fitness journey is beginning, I am met with another serendipitous opportunity. My mother began to tell me about this new technology coming on the market. It was some kind of workout machine that helped people get stronger bones and she wanted to buy one and open a strength clinic. So being a loving son, a burgeoning fitness buff, and a passionate student of business, I helped her do some research to come up with a business model.
It did not make sense to me to open a new facility. How do we market for this new service that nobody really knows even exists? So one day I was sitting at my chiropractor’s office waiting to get adjusted and realized he had a big open room in the back. That was it! I would use the same “business within a business” model that I used with the music lessons and open this new business inside the chiropractors office, it was a perfect fit! The service we would provide is a perfect complement to chiropractic care. I would provide the equipment, infrastructure, and labor and he would provide the space, the overhead, and the clientele.
So in the fall of 2011, I made the leap of faith and took out a business loan to start a new company called Wholebody Systems. We have now opened 3 offices and have developed into a multi-purpose exercise therapy program that serves a variety of different people. We have amazing partnerships with 3 chiropractic offices in the north metro Atlanta area and have helped hundreds of people get stronger and healthier over the last half decade.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
HA! That’s funny. No the road has not been smooth at all. When I started Wholebody Systems, my two sons were 3 and 5 years old. The hardest part was trying to balance being a successful entrepreneur, good husband and father. I was thankful to have an amazingly supporting wife that helped me, I could not have done it without her.
I was also not prepared to be working alone. My previous business experience was working with a great team of friends who all cared deeply about our success. I have had to grow in many ways to be successful without a business partner.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Wholebody Systems – what should we know?
Wholebody Systems is an exercise therapy program. Our clients work one on one with a personal exercise therapist using some of the most advanced fitness technology on the market. Our studios are located inside chiropractic facilities, although you do not have to be a patient to participate.
Another term we use is clinical fitness as we specialize in helping people that have challenges with traditional exercise. If someone has chronic back pain, knee problems, or any other conditions that keep them from traditional exercise we are a good option. However, we also work with many clients that just appreciate an effective workout that they can fit into their busy schedule. The thing that really sets us apart is the technology we use. These specialized instruments allow us to get an amazing workout in such a short period of time that our sessions are only 15 minutes long.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Faith. There have been plenty of times when I felt like giving up, but having faith in my journey’s path has kept me in it, and is ultimately responsible for any success I’ve had. I think every entrepreneur goes through that, and it is the ones that have the mental toughness, resourcefulness to adapt, and faith to proceed that shine through. I believe in what I am doing.
