Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandria Thomas.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Beyond the Flash began as a hobby back in 2010. I was hired as an Art School intern with the city of Atlanta’s Cultural Affairs Department and specifically assisted one of the Mass Communications instructors at Clark Atlanta University. The role exposed me to several videography and photography resources at an early age. After aging out of the program in 2012, I realized from that point forward that I had developed a passion for the media arts, which made it easy to instantly determine a major during my four years of college. (Mass Communications with a concentration in Film and Media Arts).
The love grew into what is now called Beyond the Flash Productions. Where I provide videography and photography sessions for weddings, proms, family portraits, glam shoots, etc. My production business is my part-time love. My full time is as a Technical Operator for Warner Media in Atlanta, where we focus on live reply, playback and edit of sports and entertainment television. I have been enjoying this job for four years now. It also was created from the same roots that my personal business came from. Along with the fact that I played several sports in my life. So why not work a job that combines sports and media production.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has not always been a smooth road. I was told several times that Mass Communications wasn’t going to be good enough to get me a good job, which was hard to hear when you know that your dream job is within that field. I was denied a few opportunities due to how competitive the industry is. When I first began my client base was slim, and I almost became discouraged, but my family began to support and promote my work, which grew my clientele tremendously. I was forced to gain a lot more patience. I also began doing a lot of work for free/with little to no pay. That alone became a humbling experience, to say the least.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a Photographer, Videographer and editor for live a post-production. I specialize in live production editing and photography. I am most proud of my journey and the obstacles that I have overcome to even get this far. I believe that there are a boatload of extremely talented people in our industry, and I think the one thing that sets me apart would be within my photography. I enjoy leaving my photographs in their natural state. I use as little photo manipulation tools as possible. Allowing the subject to shine and my “eye” to do the work.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Faith in God believing in myself. Ignoring negative opinions. Staying consistent and committed to the long term goal. Finding joy in your job. My favorite is not feeling obligated to work. I look forward to it and miss it when I’m not.
