Meet Alexis Avery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Avery.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey has had a lot of twists and turns, but my art has always been the one constant. I’ve been creating as long as I can remember, and it has always come from a place of trying to understand myself and the world around me. Instead of going to school for art, my natural curiosity led me to study psychology in college. For many years I never tried to sell my art because I wasn’t “classically” trained, and I work in a variety of mediums. I have always been one to forge my own path, and my career is still evolving. Last year, I became a certified yoga teacher and have been enjoying applying my creativity in this format. I often tell people I’m creating a job for myself that doesn’t exist yet, and am excited to see where my passions take me in the future!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I have yet to meet anyone that has traveled a completely smooth road, myself included! Like many others, I’ve struggled with bouts of depression and anxiety throughout my life. When dealing with my mental health, I’ve found it can demolish your confidence and make it difficult to function. For a long time, I felt like if my mind were a car, it was constantly pulling left. Finding balance felt exhausting and at times, almost impossible. I’m thankful I had the opportunity to go to therapy and learn how to manage my emotions more effectively. Learning to love myself and stop doubting my strengths has made all the difference.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Unlike other artists, I refuse to specialize and enjoy working in various mediums. I draw, paint, take photos, make soy wax candles and create jewelry! I love to learn new skills and find new ways to create and express myself. A couple of years ago, I learned how to oil paint and have been creating landscapes from photos I take while hiking. I have a deep love of nature and many of my current works feature flowers, birds and butterflies. My art feels free and I enjoy following where my heart (and art) takes me!

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
This area is a collage of different cultures, perspectives and lifestyles and I love the diversity! I know people that have moved here from all over the world, and I think that gives us a unique opportunity to come together and create from a global perspective. Aside from the traffic, I love it here!
