Meet Alexis Randall of Batter and Baked in Athens

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Randall.

Alexis, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started baking when I was little in elementary school. My dad is an amazing cook and a very good baker as well. I grew up watching him bake and helping him in the kitchen. My aunt (his sister) is extremely talented and use to make these elaborate cakes in the shapes of shoes and handbags, and after watching her, I knew I wanted to do that also, so I started baking a lot. My grandma always told me I should sell my desserts, but at the time, I was having fun. After graduating from college, I took cookie and cake decorating classes and fell in love. I’ve been doing custom cookies and cakes ever since. Fast forward to 2018. I decided it was time to put together a business plan and become official. That is when I launched Batter and Baked, LLC.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely not! Building a business is hard work, and Batter and Baked is my second job, so time has been a struggle, and I am still trying to find the best way to balance a full time position, baking, and life. When I first set out to start my business, I ran into an issue of obtaining my cottage food license. At first, I was told I couldn’t run a business out of my home as a renter. That answer delayed me for a few months, but I continued to be persistent and had to figure out how to ask the right questions.

At times I felt like I was running in circles trying to figure out what licensing I needed. I kept asking questions and more questions until I had a better understanding of what I needed to do. In the end, I was approved, and Batter and Baked were launched.

Please tell us about your business.
Batter and Baked specialize in custom cakes, cookies, and cupcakes. I love the creative side of designing edible art! I would say my most popular items are the custom cookies. However, the salted caramel cupcake is extremely popular!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I wouldn’t have taken no for an answer when I initially inquired about starting a home business (Cottage Food Business). I let a lot of time go by before I decided to go again, and I feel that it was time wasted. Other than that, I wouldn’t do anything else differently. Each step has been a learning process, and I continue to learn something new every day.
