Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Taylor.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Alicia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was as young as nine when I first remembered moving bedroom furniture and adding pillows to a shared bedroom with my two sisters. The quarters were tight, but I was happier decorating the room with teen photos than going out to play. Growing up was no different and when I finally acquired my own home it just gave me free range to decorate on a larger scale. My husband including my kids were my biggest fans and always encouraged me to open a business and share my love of design with others. I played around with the thought for years however never pursuing the idea. One thing for sure, you can never stop a creative mind from creating and so that desire never seized.
Recently, my husband and I built a brand new home and the idea to decorate birthed new creative excitement. I began a new home journey, sharing my spaces of my home with friends and family and ultimately opening an Instagram page called, Design and Style Studio. Creativing this page provided me an outlet to get inside the interior design world and feel comfortable showcasing my work. I have followed many designers and often share my work.
Since then, the opportunities to work as a decorator has expanded from working on residential homes to commercial projects such as salons and training centers and staging real estate properties. The majority of my clients connect with me by word of mouth and what I share on social media. My clients all have the same adjective and that is to create beautiful spaces with affordability and style. I don’t feel an interior decorator is for the wealthy but for everyone. I feel spaces awaken your senses and allows your personality to come alive. I thoroughly enjoy witnessing that on reveal day – when they get to see their spaces for the first time – the excitement lets me know – it was a job well done.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I think lots of people believe that hiring a designer to decorate their home is something they can not afford and often times they make attempts to achieve the look themselves.
Doing this I find clients communicate frustration by making indecisive decisions, purchasing items they like but not necessarily have a place for, ultimately making many return trips back to the store – this turns into wasted time, wasted fuel and wasted effort. This happens often and it becomes the job of the designer to help share the vision, execute timely and offer affordability.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Design and Style Studio – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I have an interior decorating business and help clients achieve personal spaces for their lifestyle. I love accessorizing especially with objects that relate to the client – it puts a personal stamp in the space and that’s what it’s all about – creating it for them.
I’m proud to know that the majority of my clients are by word of mouth, once I complete a project, my clients are great at sending me referrals and enjoy showcasing their rooms with others. I believe what’s sets me apart is my passion and love for designing for others. I treat each space with personal attention to detail as if I were to live in the space myself – each one is special and it gives me such gratitude to see their vision through.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Originally most of my designs and clients were working with residential homes, which kept me in my comfort zone. However, most recently I have been offered opportunities to move outside that and work in a capacity to think outside the box. Although a challenge, Interior Decorating has always been a passion, so if I design a tiny closet, work on an aviation training center or design spaces on a movie set, my desire will always be to satisfy my client the best way I know how – and that’s with my use of creativity.
