Today we’d like to introduce you to Alivia Lloyd.
Alivia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was raised in business and taught to run a business from the age of 10-18.
From 2001 – 2009 my family owned a clothing store and a cafe in Statesboro, Ga. My uncle also owned a barber shop right next door where I swept floors and sold snacks, he is my biggest role model. I looked forward to going straight up there after school. School was hard for me. I was bullied for years because I was well dressed and my hair was always done. I guess you can call it blessed from my family’s business, it didn’t feel that way to me but as time went on, I grew and seen it more. My family decisions to become business owners influenced my life in ways that I am so grateful for now. It made me who I am today, humble, optimistic and a Marketing and Brand Manager. Those establishments are where I grew up and had my childhood experiences. It was all I knew and all I wanted to be…. a black business owner!
My family had a good run with their business, especially being black down in southeast Georgia. 8 years to be exact, that’s the amount of time I spent taking road trips with my parents to warehouses buying loads of clothes and products for the store. Once I turned 16, I was able to open up on weekends alone and work evenings at the cafe. I started to understand profiting and the importance of promotion. We were located downtown on west main street so I even found myself standing outside yelling “Hey, we’re open, need a jacket, music, oils!” or “Help me, help you!” I loved every moment of servicing my people, it brought so much laughter that relived so much pain.
I had trouble in school and got into a lot of it to. Getting bullied from middle school to senior year of high school took a toll on my grades. Maybe combined with working after school but working with my family was my rehab. It gave me insight and hope. My uncle Luke use to get all the tea, from who said what or did what to me… school was the one thing I didn’t need, it was taking away my joy in life and wasn’t teaching me the things I needed to REALLY know. One day in 2007 I went to my father and told him I was ready to quit school… I was the last out of 3 and could have been the FIRST one to graduate from high school, but I felt God had other plans. So, I withdrew and moved out and my mother said I had to find a job somewhere else. Even though it was like heaven on earth having that business, they had no choice but to close the store after the recession in 2009. I followed my heart right on time and stayed ahead of the storm.
After a couple of years of living on my own and researching I realized the world was evolving and social media became more and more relevant around 2009. So, it was time I created my first legit business in 2010 as a Magazine company named L.A.N.E. Magazine Graphics. I began to create digital business designs (you call it digital content now) and getting new projects every day. I began to motivate others to start a business and how to become more in control of their time and money. I helped create over 50 + businesses by 2012. Fast forward to 2020, My business has re-named to King’s Land Marketing, I provide branding and marketing services. I have over 200 clients a year and business is BUSY’ness!! I believe my story is what makes me successful, not where I am today.
After all I have accomplished, I did it all without a high school diploma or college degree. That’s the gag! I don’t encourage, but I quit high school because I was ready to live and make money… none of these things were being taught in school, neither finance or about credit. While most kids were out at parties spending their parent’s money or studying to go to college to spend their parent’s money, I was working toward becoming a CEO to make my own money. I was dreaming, and a little sooner than others… I started to achieve goals; debt free. The norm may be to follow society rules, but I am glad to say today I am 31, married and the world is working in my favor. The new generation understands the importance of self-employment and being your true self. I see a day when I do have kids that being different will be accepted with open arms and I will be there as their #1 supporter.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I am 31 now and I have had 3 jobs outside of working for my family and having my own business. No jobs in my entire life has lasted over 3 months outside of myself. I was always fired. So, the challenge is believing in yourself that you can provide for yourself. The test in life is having faith that God will provide. I am a servant to people who need my services. Help me, help you…no one can fire me from a gift that was given and instilled.
Go after your dreams, the only challenge in life is not following your heart and thinking that you have to please others. I was bullied in school, not only from students but from teachers making me feel like I wouldn’t be successful. I am great with numbers, I just couldn’t show my work how they wanted me to do it, and that is a great example on how there is NOT one way to do something, there are many ways and many levels to success.
