Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Aitken.
Allison, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My business partner and I were looking for our next project and fell in love with the craft-and-sip idea. There was already a booming paint-and-sip industry in Atlanta, so we wanted to bring in a new and unique craft to shake things up. We ultimately decided to start with succulent terrariums because they’re completely customizable for our guests and they’re fun and relaxing to make! They’re also easy to care for at home, which is a huge bonus for our guests new to gardening. We began our business by hosting Sipping Plant events in local restaurants and bars. After a few months and plenty of events, we decided it was time to move The Sipping Plant into a brick-and-mortar store of its own. On December 14th, 2017, we held our first class in the new location on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs and we’ve been growing very quickly ever since!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We’ve been very fortunate not to hit many bumps in the road but the bumps we have hit have mostly been growing pains. For example, when we opened the new location, we started seeing big jumps in the numbers of customers through the door each week. Our plant supplier was keeping up with us no problem, so we hadn’t spent the time to find a back-up supplier. As luck would have it, on the Monday of our busiest week to-date, our plant supplier had a heater malfunction, and his entire crop of succulents froze. It was devastating for him and a big wake-up-call for us. We scrambled to find enough plants for our customers that week. Everything worked out in the end but we learned a stressful and uncomfortable lesson.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the The Sipping Plant story. Tell us more about the business.
My business is called The Sipping Plant. We are Atlanta’s newest and most unique craft-and-sip experience. We teach our guests to make their own customized succulent terrarium while they enjoy BYOB drinks with friends. We pride ourselves on being a new and different experience for the Atlanta area.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’ve always believed that if you work hard, you will be successful. We work hard to make this business successful and we are proud to see it doing well. As far as luck goes, I think that my business partner and I are lucky to be a part of a community that is excited to try out a new experience like the The Sipping Plant.
