Today we’d like to introduce you to Alysha Drummond.
Alysha, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Well for starters; I am a country girl born and raised in Brunswick, GA. In 2012; I left my hometown to go to college at Georgia Gwinnett College. GGC was located in Lawrenceville, GA. I met so many talented people from the Atlanta area while I was attending college there. Every person I came across seemed to know that I loved poetry. I changed my major multiple times and finally settled on Psychology. I am glad I ended up with my current major because it opened my eyes to the realities of the world.
What my talent? Well I am a Poet. I have been writing since I was in the 4th grade. One day I just picked up the pen and it was on from there. I love everything about writing. Poetry is my heartbeat. As the years passed by; I realized that I wanted to publish a poem book. Poetry had become a part of me. I improved my craft by exploring different writing styles. I enjoy writing Free Verse Poems. Most of my work speaks about love, heartbreak, survival, mental illness, family, depression, and so much more.
I remember in school when we used to write down our long term goals and short term goals. My long term goal was to have a published poem book by the time I was 18. As I grew older and wiser; I realized that it is hard finding a legit publisher. Finding someone who won’t steal your hard work and is not in it for only the money. I started about two different books; then I sat down and decided to self-publish. I said to myself, “It would be smarter to publish a chapbook. I know what I’d like so I might as well do it myself!” So I did. I began working on my chapbook. A chapbook is a poem book that is less than 40 pages. Just like my poems; I had the opportunity to “free verse” my book. Mostly meaning I could get creative. There were no rules because I was the only one making them.
My chapbook released on July 17th, 2019. I can say that it was the most draining yet most successful moment of my life. I have a self-published book. Written, formatted, and printed by me. I can say all of those times I wanted to give up; I’m glad I didn’t. This is only the beginning for me. I can’t wait to share more with the world.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely been a challenging journey. I had to take a break from college because I found myself more focused on my writing. I didn’t know how to find the perfect balance between my major and my writing. I love poetry. I also love psychology. College is expensive. I realized that I was wasting money and time. Looking back now I can see that I needed that break. That mental break allowed me to recoup and focus on one thing at a time. I realized that it doesn’t matter how long it has taken me; I will complete both task. I have already completed my first task: publishing my own book. Now it’s time for my second: finish college.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Poet’s Heart – what should we know?
“Poet’s Heart”, I guess you can say that’s my alter ego. I am a very creative individual. I have made hand painted wooden crates for baby showers and other occasions. I’ve also painted jars for the holidays. I even made my own ornaments. All of my creativity is a part of me. At the top of the list is poetry.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I believe support would be most important to my success. I have already accomplished what many said I couldn’t. Now I would just like to spread my truth to the world.
