Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Hardewig.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Amanda. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Starting photography just kind of dropped into my lap. I was going through a rough time in my life, graduating college, walking into a world of unknown, and I needed an escape. I bought my first camera and just starting shooting landscapes. Isn’t that how all photographers start? But it quickly evolved into something I wanted/needed to do every day. It became my passion, my drive, my dream. But to tell you how I got to where I am today is difficult because to me it’s hard to believe. I’m not famous, I’m not the best of the business, I have a long ways to go to be where I want to fully be, but I couldn’t be where I am without the support of my family, friends, and their friends that help spread the word and let me build my portfolio capturing their moments throughout life. I started with word of mouth and working mainly with high school seniors, then I moved across the country with my husband as he was stationed down in Fort Benning, GA. Between moving, marriage, expecting our first child, and him deploying while I was due to give birth. I stepped back for a while. But when they say the military is a whole new family, they are not exaggerating. It was because of the support of the other wives and their families that I have been able to continue doing what I love. I don’t believe it was my hardwork and talent that fully got me to where I am today. Yes, it’s part of it. But I believe its everyone in my life; long life friends, family, new friends, and strangers, that ultimately got me to this point. And I’m so beyond grateful for every single person.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Being in the military lifestyle and trying to create a successful business is never a smooth road. Some struggles we faced were moving across country, being in a new city with new people and having to start all over again. Along with moving, we ended up getting pregnant and expecting our son, Archer. However, the biggest struggle of them all was my Husbands deployment. He left shortly after we found out we were having a boy and returned four months after Archer was born. But I wouldn’t trade any of it, it’s shaped me as a woman, mother, and a businesswoman.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Fortem Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Fortem Photography started as a small little dream between two sisters. However with life, I ended up solely taking over and pursuing it. Fortem is a unique word and stands for Bravery in Latin. I specialize in all types of photography, however, my two biggest types of sessions are; Senior portraits and Maternity. I am known for just having a blast. I love to play music, make people awkward dance, play different games, and just be themselves. I believe I am most proud of the brand I’ve built for myself, being able to capture the fun, energy, and love that sparks from each individual. I’m proud of my company making it this far and still having so much more room to grow. I’m proud of it all. I’m proud of myself and the friendships I was able to build.
What I believe sets me apart are few things. I strive to be affordable, but still being true to me. I understand the time and effort that is put into photography and editing. But I also know how important it is to document your life and not break the bank. I want to be able to provide well, professional photos, but do it at a reasonable price and still not set myself short. Another thing I believe that sets me apart is I will spend hours finding the perfect location for each client. Whether it’s a park or a random road on the side of the highway, I will find it. I want each photo to feel special and unique for each client, plus I like a good adventure sometimes!
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Right now I’m just trying to grow. Grow my followers, my talent, my clientele, and myself. I have a few weddings planned and I’m super excited to dip my toe into that field of work and continue to excel in weddings.
Big changes are coming, but it’s the military, they may change ten times before we even decide them. 🙂
