Today we’d like to introduce you to Amaya White.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Amaya. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always been interested in taking pictures. Around December of last year, my god mom bought me a camera and I took full advantage of that. I started by taking it with me everywhere. I took pictures when I hung out with my friends and when I went to parties. I was also working at a recording studio at the time, so I would take it to work with me and take pictures of some of the clients we had. I started practicing different editing styles and I began with strictly black and white. For me, I never saw a lot of photographers shoot in black and white and I thought it was a unique style. Eventually, I started playing with different editing styles on color pictures. After posting my pictures on Instagram, I received a lot of attention and requests for bookings. While talking to clients, I was told that my style of editing is what caught their attention. It’s is very simplistic, however, it brings out the vibrancy of the subject and their surroundings.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting up was a bit difficult because I wasn’t really sure what I was doing. I have a lot of friends who are amazing photographers and they all have their own style of editing. I wanted to convey my own creativity through my photos but not have it be too overwhelming. It was a lot of trial and error and is still taking some practice. As far as getting bookings, it has been tough simply because of COVID-19. Before the pandemic, I was doing a lot of shoots for people. Now that we are seven months into “quarantine,” people are booking again but it’s been a challenge trying to do shoots while maintaining social distancing and overcoming certain restrictions.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I run a photography business. I shoot the pictures and edit them myself. I first started as a session photographer for recording studios but then started shooting for clients outside of that environment. As a company, I am most proud of the fact that this grew into something that I can call a business. Taking pictures was always a hobby of mine and I only intended for it to be a side hustle but I am grateful that I can call it a business. When shooting, I really like to use outdoor spaces. People are comfortable in environments that they know and everyone knows outside. These days, more photographers are focused on having a set location for their concepts and shoots. I feel like the outdoors is a neutral setting and allows for a lot more freedom and expression.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
The person who bought me the camera; if my god-mom hadn’t bought it for me, I probably wouldn’t be taking pictures right now. My parents have been a big support system. My friends have let me practice my craft on them and I’ve really appreciated that.
