Meet Amelia Jackson of Photography by Amelia Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amelia Jackson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Amelia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My love for photography started when I was six years old. After months of begging, my father finally allowed me to take my first photo on his Nikon camera. From there, I couldn’t control my desire to capture every moment, every experience, with a photograph.

It wasn’t long before my love for the camera transcended into an admiration for fashion. Coming from three generations of seamstresses, I learned about fabric textures, design, and style at an early age. When a photographer suggested I should become a fashion model at the age of 17, I ran to the opportunity. And for twenty years, I graced the runway stages and fashion houses in New Orleans, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, and, eventually, Atlanta.

During my time as a model, I studied from the same photographers that photographed me. I hold an MBA in Marketing, a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts and a Bachelor’s in Business Administration.

Today, I specialize in Fashion, Portraits, and Event photography. My creative images have been featured in publications such as Sheen Magazine, I am JMariie, Heavy Rotation, Level63 and Rolling Out Magazine.

I exhibited photos at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Atlanta Fulton County Public Library, Hammonds House Museum, and other local businesses in Atlanta. I am a long-time member of Sistagraphy, a collective of African American female photographers.

Has it been a smooth road?
It was not always a smooth road. Photography is not only a creative medium but a business. In any business, you will have the challenges of establishing the right clientele that will ensure a successful business. The first year was a year of proving myself. Proving I had the professionalism and quality work to make it in an industry that is highly saturated.

Everybody has a camera, whether it is a DSLR or a phone camera. Not only am I competing with other pro-photographers, I am also competing with amateurs that believe photography consists of point & shoot.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in Fashion, Portrait, and Event photography. With a contemporary approach, I strive to make timeless images, forget about the typical “smile”. I look to capture the essence of each person. I am called the Beauty Composer because I bring out the beauty of each client no matter what sitting they are in.

My work is a mixture of artful and creative portraiture with an editorial feel. My client’s photos looks like it was taking out of the pages of a magazine.

What set me apart from others is the combination of my creative portraiture and the capability to put my client at ease to ensure their priceless images. My sessions are always stress-free and my clients feel like a celebrity in front of my lens.

My services range from maternity to newborn, kids, families, seniors, model testings, corporate and bridal portraits. I offer the option of studio and natural lighting, services are also available for location photography and weddings. I will travel anywhere my service is needed.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
With the major shift of film (movie) in Atlanta, photography businesses can be very lucrative here. However, Atlanta, in my opinion, does not value photography the same as New York and Los Angeles.

There are more opportunities for fashion, fine arts and commercial photography in those cities. I do believe in years to come, the increasing presence of the movie industry will increase the demand for more fashion, fine arts, and commercial photography.
