Today we’d like to introduce you to Amisha Nair.
Hi Amisha, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved to the United States in 2016 in the hopes that finishing my high school and college here would help my grow up craft in the place I see myself setting up my life in. I was devoted to filmmaking and got my bachelor’s degree in Film & Digital Media. I currently still make short films that I’m so incredibly proud of, but my main focus has been photography. What started as just taking senior pictures of my closest friends and not even knowing how to edit them, has turned into building several connections with models, makeup artists, stylists, and other creatives all over Atlanta as well as seeing my photography on the cover of publications along with other features I’m so grateful for!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The rougher the road, the calmer the destination feels. It’s felt like the road to getting anywhere has made up for its madness by being so worth the struggle in the end whether it be the end product itself or what I’ve learned along the way. Moving to a different country and establishing myself there was a challenge in and of itself. Financially, I’ve also seen my fair share of bad days (or months…or years), but staying focused on the goal amid it all has paid off. I’ve had to deal with a lot of people that will test your drive by putting you in situations that make you question whether or not the challenge of all of this is worth it. I’m grateful to those people for showing me that it really was worth it. I’ll have to deal with a lot in the future, but I feel better prepped for it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I currently specialize in fashion, editorial, and studio photography. I’ve definitely seen the progress of my work throughout the years and I get excited after every shoot because I feel so proud of myself and the people I’ve worked with for creating this piece of art together. It’s taken a while to develop my own style but I would say I love playing with colors and contrast while also making use of locations I shoot at, especially if the goal of the shoot is to make it cinematic. I like building a connection with the people I work with beforehand and that makes the shoot itself so much more exciting and it sometimes turns into amazing friendships!
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I used to be a very “by-the-book” person and while it’s helpful to be that way in certain situations, it also limits excitement to an extent. Last year, I made the decision to quit a very mentally tasking job in order to take the reins for my own creative world, but this meant a decent financial setback, losing a sponsorship, and a troublesome off-boarding process. While I’m still dealing with the splash-back of that decision, it’s been one of the best I’ve made. I’ve had the time to build my brand the way I want to while also having the time to develop very meaningful connections with the people around me. It truly feels like a door was unlocked the minute I took that risk and I don’t regret it for a second.
