Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Head.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My husband, Kevin, and I always thought we would open up a private counseling practice during the “empty nest” years. My background is in clinical social work, and Kevin’s background is in ministry. We thought this would be a great combination to help people through the rough times in their lives!
The opportunity came quite a bit earlier than we expected. We were living in North Carolina when within a couple of years of each other, we lost my dad and my husband’s mom to cancer. As each of our remaining parents relocated back to the Atlanta are, we began talking about the possibility of moving to the Atlanta area, not because we didn’t want to remain in North Carolina, but because we wanted our children, who were ages 3 and 5 at the time, to have the opportunity to know their remaining grandparents.
So, we decided that if one of us could land a “real” job, then the other one of us would work to get our counseling practice off the ground. As it turned out, Kevin found a job which allowed us to pack up and move to Marietta/East Cobb. We moved to East Cobb in the summer of 2007 and opened our practice that September.
2017 marks New Perspectives for Life’s 10 year anniversary!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has been surprisingly smooth. I would say our biggest challenge was figuring out how to get the word out about the practice, especially because we had a limited budget. After a lot of trial and error, we found that the greatest form of marketing for us has been networking, Because our industry is so personal for people, trust is one of the most important things we need the opportunity to establish. Being a part of networking groups allows us to meet people, build relationships with them and, as a result, gain trust from others.
Please tell us about New Perspectives for Life.
At New Perspectives for Life, we provide counseling, life coaching, hypnosis and corporate workshops. We work with children, teens, college students, families, married couples and individual adults. Some of the issues we specialize in include life transition and adjustment, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, self-care, mindset, communication, motivation, and self-concept. One of the things we are known for is that we do not label our clients. Instead, we operate from a strengths perspective, believing that our clients are stronger and more capable than they might think. We help them see and begin to believe this for themselves. We have a unique way of helping others adjust their perspective in order to move their lives forward. As a company, we are most proud of our word-of-mouth referral community. Many of our current and former clients refer their family and friends to us. We believe that is the highest compliment we could receive, to be trusted enough by those whom we serve that they would refer those near and dear to them. We are also proud of our community referral sources that have been developed. These sources include several of the larger churches in the area as well the local school district. What sets us apart from others is that we are creative thinkers, able to listen to the content our clients share with us while, at the same time, listening to the process and content that go beyond what is being spoken. We are able to get to the heart of the matter quickly, which allows us to help move clients forward more quickly.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I honestly can’t think of anything we would have done differently. We really didn’t know what we were doing in terms of how to set up a business and all that is involved in running a business. But, we learned as we went and have been so excited every step of the way!
