Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Hamilton.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Andrea. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I moved to Atlanta, by way of Cleveland, OH in 2007 and attended Savannah College of Art and Design, majoring in Fashion Design. I have always been a natural born creative, alongside of being extremely career and finance driven, so I knew I needed another side job outside of design. I began to apply for a host of odd internships and landed one in Fashion PR. Although I had no clue what PR was or entailed, my natural talent and extensive network of athletes, music executives, and entertainers (from partying in my younger years), helped me build a strong foundation within the industry. I immediately grew fast within the agency I had worked with, which led me to make public relations my career focus, resulting to me dropping out of college (with only two quarters left) to pursue my new found dream career in PR
After spending a few years with the agency I began with, I decided to part ways and launch my own agency, Theory Communications, alongside my sister, Erica Hamilton. We had an existing strong network, so we were able to land Lou Williams (NBA star and 2-time 6th Man of the Year) as our first client. From that point we quickly landed additional high profile clientele and projects such as: VH1 Rock Doc: ATL Rise, LudaDay Weekend, DeMarre Carroll (NBA Star), The Gathering Spot, various activations for Rae Sremmurd, Grand Hustle, Roc Nation, Stephen Jackson (NBA Vet and Fox Sports commentator), iamOTHER, Netflix’s Hip Hop Evolution 2 series, Rap Plug, A3C Festival & Conference and many more.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Our road definitely hasn’t been smooth. As an entrepreneur, you will learn quickly how rocky of a road it will continue to be. There will be plenty of ups and downs … you must prepare for them all.
Upon launching our business, we landed several higher-level clients. For most, this may seem like a blessing, which it was, but it also was one of our largest struggles. We were not allowed the proper time to organize and manage the back-end of our business properly, as most businesses would have done. So we ended up spending the first year chasing our own tails in regards to understanding how to properly run our business while still managing our clients.
Please tell us about Theory Communications.
Theory Communications is an integrative communications agency, fusing traditional PR and marketing tools. Founded in 2014, our team consists of professionals with combined experience serving a number of high-profile clients in areas including Atlanta, Los Angeles, and New York City.
Theory Communications specializes in public relations, digital marketing, social media marketing, event planning and branding for lifestyle, sports and entertainment clients. We pride our company on creating informative, fresh and innovative brand awareness for our clients through extensive relations with national and local media, state-of-the-art marketing tools and strategic planning skills.
Theory Communications has been built on being a unique agency, so we don’t have one specialty we are known for. I’ve heard before however, many people select us for our expertise in media coverage for emerging entertainment acts, amazing event planning/execution skills, as well as press and branding efforts for athletes.
We are a family business, so we treat each client like family, while making a conscious effort to create synergy amongst our roster of clients. If you join the Theory Communications roster, you are now in a unique family that all help each other grow.
I am proud of our growth most importantly. Approaching our 5th-year business in April, we are very grateful for all of the support and successes we’ve reached so far.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would take the necessary time to organize our business properly on the back end. I also would pay attention to our worth and understand that while selecting clients to work with, select based off quality, not quantity.
