Meet Andrea Mills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Mills.

Andrea Mills

Hi Andrea, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello VoyageATL, I am Andrea and I am from Melbourne, FL. After graduating from Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, FL., I taught Music Education for 6 years. After teaching, I moved to Atlanta in 1992 to attend the Art Institute of Atlanta for Music Business Management because I wanted to explore entertainment in Atlanta. After receiving my AA Degree in Music Business Management, I worked for Ichiban Records and started writing poetry. My poetry writing led me to co-host a poetry radio show, Poetic Moments, with Joyce Littel on V-103. I was on the show for 10 years and wrote three books of poetry; two of them were written during my time on the radio show. My poetry books are Inspirational Love, Visions of Love, and Poetry for the Soul.

While on the radio, I realized my passion for writing personalized poetry, which is still my most inspirational use of my talent. I write for families who have loved ones providing care for their family members diagnosed Alzheimer’s and Dementia. As a surprise, I weave special memories into poems as a “Thank You” from the person receiving care. I also started speaking for several organizations as a result of my radio presence and became a Motivational Speaker. Feeling the need to expand in business knowledge, I obtained my MBA from Brenau University in Gainesville, GA.

After radio, I decided to put my voice talent to greater use and began studying to be a Voiceover Artist. I really enjoy using my voice for poetry and work projects, as well as those projects presented by the 3 agencies that I currently work with. I have Commercial, Narration, and Storytelling Demos, which can all be heard on my website. But I must say that my latest project was voicing a lottery commercial for the state of Delaware, which my friends and family thought was totally ironic considering that once upon a time…need I say more? In the voiceover industry, the work code is “Have a voice project; I will travel!” But seriously, the fun part of being a voiceover artist is that you can work anywhere in the world from your home studio or from a studio booked in your city. And yes, Atlanta is the best city!

I am currently working on voicing my own poetry project with a local musician. I hope to share it with you all real soon. My website is www.andreamills.com.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Entertainment is never smooth because everything revolves around timing. You must be ready to continue pursuing the dream that you have dreamed for yourself because success comes at many different levels. On any given day, you may have more work than you can handle within your given timeline. And then on other days, the creative table is empty until you remember that you have the ability to continue to create, even if it’s only for your enjoyment today. Creatively speaking, I am always ready for the challenges that will continue to come along the way. If it is happening around me, you can be sure that I will be writing and speaking about it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am most known in Atlanta for my poetry. I am often booked for events to share inspirational poetry to groups and organizations around the Atlanta area. I am most proud that I have the gift of creating and reciting poetry, and my voice is often recognized when I begin speaking. Along with my poetry talent, I have turned to voiceover work to continue growing in the entertainment business. I love television and radio, but my dream is to be heard, even when I am not seen.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is the ability to enjoy what you are doing whenever you decide to do it and feeling proud that you created the opportunity to shine!
