Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel English
Hi Angel, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story started with modeling. When I was modeling I had the ideas of a designer but I did not know what it was quite called yet. I just called it cutting and sewing clothes together. Until I realized that I was designing. Also when I was modeling in my head I would always change or mix different clothes that would match what the designer put me in. Silently I would be “what if we put this undershirt under the shirt so that the undershirt pops more” or “what if we put the boots with the short skirts and the tennis shoes with the long skirts”. Simple things like that. I then started learning how to sketch. And from the sketching went to watching fashion shows, YouTube tutorials etc and then started my fashion brand.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It absolutely has not been a smooth road, but no road ever is. One of my struggles along the way would be finding my own fashion. Finding my own style of designing. Being inspired by others but not completely copying them.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I considered myself a creative student. Right now I am a medical student for my major and my minor is in Law. Afterschool I typically have dance rehearsal. If I do not have rehearsals I will design.I am still proud of pulling off my own fashion show thanks to GOD, my mom, my Godma, my models, Yard Party ATL, my best friends, my attendees and my performers. What sets me apart from others is the fact that I don’t give up. I may take a little break but I believe that I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me, so that is exactly what I will do.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Advice that I would give for finding a mentor is to definitely be careful. All people do not have good intentions but also all people are not bad. If you are faith based pray about that person, if they are your mentor. If you are not, ask someone that you may trust if that person has a good feeling about them. For networking in general, know your boundaries. Fashion and a lot of other areas are all about socializing. But if you are not a social person, set a time limit if you do go to an event. What has worked well for me is definitely praying to GOD that he breaks the right people into my life, who I can benefit/learn from.
