Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel White.
Hi Angel, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Well I was born in the small town of Xenia, Ohio and moved to Georgia with my family when I was in the fifth grade. Although I love my home state, I truly consider myself a “Georgia Peach” and enjoy southern hospitality. I finished middle and high school in the Dekalb County school system and attended college at Mercer University in Macon, GA. After finishing college and grad school, I still felt lost and did not know what I wanted to do with my life. Going through school in another state, not many people knew a lot about my childhood but there was some trauma which left me lost, broken and truly believing that my past as a sexual assault victim would always hinder my growth and development into adulthood.
The first summer after graduating from college, I read a book by Frederick Bueckner that had a phrase, “Vocation is the place where our deep gladness meets the world’s deep need” that resonated with me and made me ask myself, “what is my greatest gladness”. My answer to that question was quite simple; my greatest gladness was helping and educating people. The world’s greatest need to me, at that time was, good, honest laws being enforced the way it was meant. In October of 2000 I gained employment with the Dekalb County Police Department. I remained employed there for 14 years, spending the majority of my career in investigations and as a Sergeant in the Special Victim’s Unit. Afterwards, I worked as a Child Advocate and as an investigator with the Dekalb County DA’s office. So, in all, I have dedicated over 20 years of my life advocating for survivors of physical and sexual abuse. I recall a time when I was doing Forensic Interviews on children and my husband asked me, “how do you go to work hearing those stories and not get affected by what you hear, based on your history?” I simply replied, this is therapy for me and that helping someone, actually helps me.
I have been married to my husband Dexter for 16 years and we have 3 children. Dexter, who also worked in Law Enforcement and retired as a Police Lieutenant after 27 years of service was my number one supporter and continuously encouraged me to go to Law School as he saw something in me that I did not see in myself. After serious consideration I was accepted and attended Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School graduating in 2019. After graduating I interned at the Law Office of Martin and Associates. I struggled trying to determine what area of Law I wanted to practice. After the passing of my grandmother, I watched my family be affected by grief, and how not properly planning or choosing the wrong executor can dismantle an entire family. This became my passion, and I started my own firm in 2020, specializing in Probate and Estate Planning. I am here today, walking in my purpose, educating others and serving as a firm reminder that no matter how your life starts, you too can be a survivor. Not all survivors live in darkness, there are those of us who make it to the other side…married, happy, successful; unbroken and unbowed!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wish I could say that it has been a smooth road, but no, it has not. I graduated and immediate “hung my shingle” but quickly realized that practicing law is very different than being a business owner/entrepreneur. Law school teaches you the law, but not necessarily how to be a business owner. Over the last five years, I have made mistakes, not all the best business decisions, and at times suffered from imposter syndrome. You come out of law school with debt, and it often takes money to make money. It was hard stepping out on faith and believing that as long as I kept pushing forward, clients would come, and the office bills would get paid. You have to learn to work hard and not just jump out there getting loans just to look good as a firm. You have to truly be okay with taking small steps in order to make big impacts. The company How To Manage a Small Firm has helped me see what it means to be a business owner. It was not cheap, but I doubt I would have taken the steps to be a better business owner if I had not spent money on learning how to BE a business owner.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Law Office of Angel S. White, LLC?
I call myself a TRUE probate and estate planning attorney. I do not practice any other area of law and have made this my niche market. I help families protect the things they have worked hard for and when “LIFE” happens, I help families figure it out, without having to fight it out. I am proud that my firm works hard at connecting with clients and not treating them like they are only clients. We do not use a lot of legalese and speak plain English so that clients have a clear understanding of the process and how we provide help. We are compassionate and do not try to overcharge clients. My firm also provides clients with flexible payment options, friendly staff and keep things quite simple and streamlined. Our practice provides the following services: Probate Filings, Guardianship, Wills, Trusts, Power of Attorney, and Health Care Directives
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love the old Atlanta culture! Rich in history, sometimes raw and edgy, but respectful enough to maintain southern charm and hospitality. I do not like the negative portrayal of Atlanta. Where people think that all Atlanta has to offer is what they see on social media and the negativity they see on the news. We must get back to the days where Atlanta is seen as a mecca of change, growth and stability for all who are raised here or those who have migrated here looking for a great life.
