Meet Angela Fité of Kinkistry in Mableton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Fité.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Angela. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My journey began about nine years ago when I decided to go natural. I cut my hair short to begin anew. I experimented with different protective styles in the hopes they would help promote and retain hair growth. I decided to purchase kinky curly hair extensions for a sew-in. I absolutely fell in love with the look and how the protective style made my hair grow. What I didn’t like was how expensive the hair was and how quickly the texture of the hair would change and become unusable. I tried many brands and thought if I spent more money on the extensions, the quality would be better. I soon came to the realization that was not true. As a consumer, I identified a need in the market and decided I wanted to find better options for myself and other women who had experienced the same thing. I did a lot of research and testing and discovered not only could I have quality kinky curly extensions, but I could also bring them to market at a lesser cost. Kinkistry was born in 2015!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In the beginning, I encountered many challenges from understanding and identifying the best methods of marketing to not having enough inventory. I overcame those challenges by joining a mastermind group for new entrepreneurs in the beauty industry. We realized we had many of the same issues and we were able to help each other through sharing our experiences.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Kinkistry is a kinky curly extensions company. Our products include wefted hair, clip-ins, wigs and drawstring ponytails for natural textured hair. We provide women of color with hair styling options that match the texture of their hair. We have seven different textures ranging from 3A-4C. Three of the seven textures are specific for four type hair. I am proud to own a company that is breaking stereotypes and battling texurism in the beauty industry. We often see imagery of loose curls in ads and beauty campaigns that target women of color. Kinkistry has set a standard to include tightly coiled hair in our collection and believe it is important to show the range and diversity of textured hair. We recently completed a commercial that addresses this issue. Our range of textures sets us apart from other companies as well as our texture match service. We’ve taken the guesswork out of identifying the best texture that will match your hair. It’s important to us that our customers select the correct texture the first time they purchase.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a tomboy. I am the last of 6 children. I have four brothers and a sister. Growing up with that many boys made it difficult for me to be girly. My parents divorced when I was 4. My mother taught me that opportunities are met with hard work and preparation. She taught me invaluable lessons, like no one is going to give you anything. You have to be willing to work for what you want and be ready to receive what God has for you.
