Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Kemp.
Hi Angela, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello my name is Angela and I am a freelance makeup artist also known as Vividfacez.
Living my entire life with extremely full lips gave me quite the complex as a young woman. I had this belief that if I put anything else on my face, I would bring more criticism to my features. It made me go without attempting even the simplest makeup like lip Gloss until well into my twenties. Although I wasn’t using any makeup my desire to grew more and more. Then at 35 my best friend urged me to try some new makeup products and watch YouTube to learn how to apply it. Turns out I was very good at it so much so people continued to ask if I would do their makeup and my answer was always no because I didn’t have any formal training and couldn’t risk any issues arising from that. So I decided to sign up for The Amni academy Makeup program and do some training which also covers special effects before launching my business years later and living in my passion.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been easy as with any new venture. It took quite a bit dedication to the art itself. It has taught me that even in art, you can never stop learning and perfecting your craft. Especially now since so many women can watch YouTube and Instagram and learn how to do their own. I had to be sure I learned things like history and sanitation practices of what I was doing along the way. I also learned how imperative skincare and technique and color theory are. Nothing is worse than having someone have an allergic reaction to the product you used on them. I’ve cried over failed attempts to satisfy a client. I’ve lost products and money due to not knowing who to buy from and not insuring equipment. I lost clients because of availability working a full-time job elsewhere and all. Yet, I’m still over the moon about it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My job is to make every person who graces my brushes feel like the world is theirs for the taking by enhancing the beauty they have within on the outside! Let me show you…
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Yes, find someone who is spilling over with knowledge of the business itself. Someone who is such a force in the industry you want to be in and is willing to answer any questions you may have without fear of you taking away any of their revenue. That person will be the most honest person to follow.
