Meet Angela Lieben of Jaxx Bean Bags in Doraville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Lieben.

Angela, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Jaxx Bean Bags was created because of the gap in the casual living furniture category for families and children. When anyone thinks of bean bags, they typically imagine wood-paneled basements with shag carpeting and lava lamps while families gathered using bean bags filled with thousands of tiny and uncomfortable polystyrene beads. We wanted to develop a product would provide unparalleled comfort but also has modern, stylish lines.

Jaxx began modestly 5 years ago with the development of a few bean bags. Instead of incorporating the typical pellet filling, they used upcycled, shredded foam. The combination of the shredded micro-cushions along with quality, decor friendly fabrics resulted in a more bouncier and stable bean bag for long-term comfort. Because the foam is encased in an inner liner, anyone could easily remove the cover for washing or change it out for a different fabric.

The concept eventually progressed from bean bags to solid foam furniture and futons that are both functional and timeless. Now, Jaxx Beans Bags has an array of products that flawlessly adapt to any environment, be it indoors or outdoors. Families and their children can now enjoy having quality casual living furniture without breaking the bank.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Manufacturing in America is not an easy process, but nothing worthwhile ever is. We don’t see problems in manufacturing as an obstacle but more of an opportunity to focus on productive solutions. During the early phase of Jaxx Bean Bags, we had to develop an affordable method for getting products into the hands of consumers. As you may know, shipping fifty-pounds of shredded foam is not just uneconomical, but an environmental problem too. We had to get creative and find a solution fast. That’s when the team discussed the idea of using vacuum compression for reducing the size of the packages.

Luckily for us, it worked! We now use vacuum compression for all of our products which reduce the size of packaging by nearly 75%. This also worked for our larger pieces like the Zipline. Each of the larger pieces is assembled to include the liner and then rolled compressed. We place the compressed pieces in a box with the fabric and ship directly to the consumer.

As your readers may know, the casual living furniture category is growing every day with companies popping up on the internet. The competition for eyes is formidable. However, we’ve been extremely fortunate in terms of media exposure for the brand. We’ve worked really hard on our marketing efforts as to differentiate ourselves from other brands. And having a unique voice for Jaxx Bean Bags makes it all worth the effort and time.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Jaxx Bean Bags – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
At Jaxx, we go against the grain and do things differently. But one thing’s for certain, everything we do is always a team effort. Everyone from our sewing artisans to production line workers to designers to administrative and customer service representatives matter. No one team member or person is more important than the other. We all play an integral role in the success of Jaxx. On top of that, we set high standards not only for our workers for our partners. To keep the Made in America spirit alive, we’ve teamed up with a number of American-based suppliers such as our New England- and California-based fabric mills and our Georgia-based foam supplier.

At a time when other companies are out for making a quick buck, we work together in making Jaxx a principled brand which includes our commitment to being environmentally conscious. Skimping on detail or quality is not our style or motto, so if we have to take a little longer to get it right—that’s what we do. Because making the highest quality bean bags and furniture something we completely stand by.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Jaxx is always looking toward the future. Yeah, we could rest on our bean bag designs, but part of what makes Jaxx so successful is having the talent for creating more innovative designs. We are now in the process of releasing a new line of modular sofas which have an incredibly stylish Boho chic vibe. Each collection has interchangeable pieces that let anyone customize their own space. This gorgeous and affordable collection will be the first foam modular system to be completely rolled compressed and delivered straight to the consumer. Part of our plan is making sophisticated designs accessible to everyone.
