Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelik Edmonds.
Hi Angelik, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
My first exposure to the law was through my parents’ addiction. At age 5, I was exposed to the prison industrial complex, although I did not have the vocabulary to name it so at that time. I understood that my parents needed help and treatment, not jail time.
This life experience led to to inquire and investigate other legal intersections like the school-to-prison pipeline in third grade. Again without the language to name it, I couldn’t understand why certain children were sent to ISS (In-School Suspension) when others were given the freedom to make mistakes.
My grandmother obtained custody of my sisters and me and cultivated my love to address systemic inequality. When I announced that I wanted to be the next ‘Matlock’ with my own civil rights practice and criminal defense practice, my grandma responded, “Of course, you will.” My mother’s sobriety has inspired and framed my perspective on meaningful second chances and treating individuals with dignity through life-shattering experiences and traumas. I apply that approach to my lawyering.
After obtaining my Bachelor’s in Journalism at WSSU, I studied Critical Race Theory at UCLA School of Law. I’ve been privileged to serve people in many capacities, in non-profits, as a law clerk, Civil Rights attorney, and now as business counsel to growing Atlanta metro area businesses. I have loved evolving and growing as a business person and lawyer while adapting my firm (practice areas, technology, and services) to suit my changing lifestyle.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been bumpy! As a child and into adulthood, I struggled with abandonment issues. My overinvestment in productivity led me to sacrifice other important self-sustaining parts like rest and self-care. Ultimately, medical ailments forced me to slow down and re-evaluate my practice.
Following the passing of my grandmother, I had to interrogate whether and to what extent I wanted to bear the weight of my purpose at the expense of myself. About a year ago, I committed to a business-focused practice to help small business owners avoid the stress of lawsuits. This pivot has helped tremendously because the vicarious trauma of civil rights cases is no longer dominant in my practice.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson that I’ve learned is to seek wise counsel and pivot when necessary. I hired a business coach to help me in my second year of business, and her insights were transformational for my practice. She helped me learn to delegate, systematize, and become a more savvy business owner.
A close second lesson is the power of the pivot. In the last four years, I have changed locations, practice areas, team members, strategy, and more. Instead of fighting against the current change, I would tell my former self to appreciate the growth that comes alongside change.
