Today we’d like to introduce you to Ann Fry.
Ann, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I know a lot of us illustrators joke about how cliché it is to answer with “I’ve been drawing my whole life”, but it’s true for me. I really don’t remember what made start it, but I do know that I’ve been continuing it because I love to draw and create stories.
But I can’t say that I’ve been driven to this field alone. I don’t think I would be here if it wasn’t for all the friends that I’ve made at SCAD. They’ve all pushed me to become a better and stronger artist, and I can’t thank them all enough for their support.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been challenging, that’s for sure! Anxiety, depression, and all that jazz aside, the biggest challenge I’ve had was at the college I attended before coming to Atlanta. I was so incredibly depressed and unhappy with the direction my life and work was going that I seriously considered quitting art and going into another profession. I’m happy to say that I’m in a much better place now and that I am so glad that I didn’t give it up.
Please tell us more about your art.
I’m an illustrator that specializes in character design and art direction. As such, my work is focused on character-driven narratives and experimenting with a variety of illustration styles. But what truly separates my work from other illustrators is my whimsical nostalgic style and colors.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I just recently graduated, so I have a lot of plans! I’m in a group of people creating a pitch for an animated TV show, as well as in the midst of creating the assets for my own video game.
