Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony James.
Anthony, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up my father always had a camera with him everywhere he went. I always loved the images he was able to capture and eventually decided to start taking photographs of my own. Out of high school I joined the Navy and had a chance to experience different cultures. I loved immersing myself in these other cultures – it helped me appreciate people of all different backgrounds and helped me become a better photographer overall. Once out of the Navy I went back to school while working full time, and I continued to dabble in photography. My hobby turned in to a business when a friend asked me to shoot an event, then another, and another. What I’ve loved most about photography is that I have been able to capture memories for friends and family, and that has allowed me to meet new people and capture their special moments too.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Photography is a skill that takes time to master. The more you shoot the better your eye becomes. I wouldn’t say I was an amazing photographer right out of the gate. I had a lot of upsets along the way, but overtime I started noticing a significant improvement in the photographs I was creating. I was also fortunate enough to have a solid base of friends that are also photographers. One in particular was very encouraging and I would spend countless hours just holding lenses for him at a shoot and asking all kinds of crazy questions into his thought process. Now that I have struck out on my own, I see my work progressing and getting better each day. I love having those ah-ha moments when I’m able to envision something and then translate it into the camera.
Anthony James Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Anthony James photography specializes in event, wedding, and engagement photos. I take amazing photos for amazing people. Photography is more than just producing great images. It’s really about getting to know the client and giving them something that they can cherish forever.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success as being able to say that I left a lasting mark with the images that I produce. Clients that refer me to their friends and family are the ultimate compliment and sign of success. These referrals encourage me to keep shooting.
