This Vision aids in the decision making process, establishing sustainable goals and objectives. Our clients are corporations, institutions, government agencies, public and private sector entities, land developers, architecture and engineering firms.
LEUNG planning+design was founded upon a commitment to excellence in each and every project we undertake. We measure ourselves by the positive impacts in the world we live in, communities we create, natural habitats we protect and preserve.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My primary responsibilities are related to projects from planning, feasibility study to community planning, parks and recreation, private and public sector developments. The continuation of involvement on a project will proceed to detail site planning, conceptual design, design development including construction documentation and administration of project schedules and budgets. My passions are working with government organization, public partners and private sectors in developing memorable public spaces.
I began my career in 1981 at Edward D. Stone, Jr & Associates (EDSA) in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The firm opened my eyes to setting a professional goal of practicing planning and landscape architecture both in Florida, in the U.S. and internationally. My projects included Marriott Harbor Beach Resort to master planning and Florida Development of Regional Impact of the currently World Golf Village project of over 6000 acres in St. Johns County, Florida. One of the challenges of large scale land planning is recognizing that physical planning and site design alone may not help to solve the spread of suburban sprawl and urban environment deterioration of as a result of suburban sprawl. I returned to Hong Kong to work in the 90’s (a place where I was born and grew up). From there I learned, understand and dedicated to New Urbanism principles and urban design movement. I would like to commit to re-establishing development through urban connectivity, with the guidance of land use. Urban planning work need to stress on the relationship between people and the built environment; designing communities suitable for people as pedestrian, also making automobile and urban mass transit feasible. In urban design I am a strong proponent of Smart Growth and Complete Streets, making public spaces accessible; producing designs that embrace culture, preserve history, respect climate and ecological balance.
I am intimately involved with projects and work closely to establish a planning and design process from inception to completion. Project involvements include Governmental relations, multi-agency coordination, development and implementation of strategies and programs for civic engagement, development of stewardship plan for the land and introducing ecotourism management and coordination. In detail site planning and design, I will begin with formation of planning concepts to preparation of specific master plan and to overseeing the implementation of the project. My work now encompasses a range of public and private sector assignments in planning and design, from metro-Atlanta to Monterrey and Chetumal, Mexico; Winston-Salem North Carolina to the Florida Keys. Community developments and urban design. Many project created livable places for people and their communities.
I collaboratively work with multi-disciplinary consultant teams in facilitating projects through completion, leading design efforts, and coordinating with the multiple disciplines. I am currently accredited by the Congress of New Urbanism, a Landscape Architect and registered with the National Council of Landscape Architecture Board (CLARB). Where I live, I am a member of Decatur Downtown Development Authority; and was a past citizen volunteer in the Sustainability Board, Zoning Task Force and Greenspace Commission for the City of Decatur, Georgia. I was also involved in sustainability and housing in Guatemala (Premio a la Excelencia – Jurado internacionales, Guatemala 2014; Mitos Realidades de la Vivienda Vertical Social – Cementos progreso, Guatemala 2011; Vivienda para Todos de Cementos Progreso – participación como miembro del jurado calificador, Guatemala 2011; Diseño Sostenible Conferencia, Cámara Guatemalteca de la Constuccion, Guatemala 2010).
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a Land Planning and Landscape Architectural design firm specializing in community planning and urban design, resorts and hotel developments.
Master Planning and Community Design
The planning and design of a livable, sustainable community requires a thorough understanding of the land and the environment, local lifestyles and the needs of future residents. The planning process will establish a Vision for the project, with close coordination between client and the consultant team.
Our planning process starts with knowledge of the land and powered by interactive communication. We draw on the clues and identifiable signs from the natural environment. Working with our clients, we develop planning principals to guide and ensure that the attributes of the land that attracted people there in the first place will still be there for many years to come.
The community plan should be as unique as its context, site conditions, and the people whose needs and desires have helped to shape it.
Site Planning and Landscape Architecture Design
Design should have a unique character that reflects the natural quality of the region, the physical characteristics of the site, culture and history of the community. A well-designed space endures use, it is functional and easy to maintain. It will also evolve with social and environmental changes over time. It should be a place where people can enjoy, relax and socialize, memorable and nourishes both the body and soul. In line with this philosophy, our approach to design involves a comprehensive process that leads the client through the project stages, from conceptual design to project implementation.
We enjoy design work, seeing a project built according to design is the highest reward for a designer.
We believe that exemplary design adds to the well-being, enrich the lives of their users, and will be enjoyed for generations to come.
What were you like growing up?
I was born and grew up in Hong Kong. At the time Hong Kong was a British colony, I went to Diocesan Boys School of the Anglican Church, I learn English starting in kindergarten and learn to read and write Chinese at school and spoke Chinese (Cantonese) at home. Hong Kong was a very populated city and is the currently one of the most densely populated place on the planet. From that basis, learning geography, interest in urban design and city planning was like growing up in the environment.
I was interested in cross country, athletics (track & field), and started running in 1970. Started cycling in Florida in 1984 and swimming in Hong Kong in 1995. Running, cycling and swimming gave me the interest to triathlon. This interest lead me to concentrate my focus on my work one task at a time; complete one task and then start the next.
Started working projects in Monterrey, Mexico and Guatemala; devoted the interest of urban design and community planning to an environment dedicated for work-force housing (low-income). This experience was a big-leap in the growing-up process for my professional personality and interest wise.
