Meet Anya Gibson of Three of Swords

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anya Gibson.

Anya Gibson

Hi Anya, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve been designing clothes since elementary school, starting with my fictional brand “Kittenz.” Inspired by childhood patron saint Britney Spears and Bratz dolls, I drew colorful, gaudy designs for my imagined teen self. Fast forward through career aspirations from clinical psychology to education, I found myself disillusioned and exhausted. Graduating with student debt and a crushed spirit, I dabbled in retail, which only deepened my post-college depression. Sulking before shifts became my norm, and I knew I had to pivot toward something that brought me joy. My love for fashion, especially goth aesthetics, had always been there. I noticed a lack of comfort and inclusivity in popular goth brands, which didn’t represent me or my community.

Cue Three of Swords. With an old laptop and stimulus check, I launched my goth/alternative clothing brand during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Tired of the lack of comfort and inclusivity in popular alternative/goth brands, I decided to create something for everyone—especially alt people of color. This is my way of celebrating and amplifying the voices and needs of my friends, my world, and myself. From sketching designs during work breaks to launching a brand with thousands of customers across the globe, Three of Swords feels as if it was always meant to happen. So here I am, a proud fashion entrepreneur inspired by post-punk records, anime binges, experimental makeup trends, and the awe-inspiring individuals I encounter daily. Three of Swords is my love letter to diverse, thriving alt communities everywhere.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One thing I struggled with was coming to terms with the reality of entrepreneur life. When you see small business owners on social media, they tend to focus on the fun stuff: sketching designs, creating mood boards, and dropping off orders. Sadly, it’s not all glitz and glam. Weeks without orders, filing taxes, and paying for everything out of pocket are part of the grind. The idea of “if you build it, they will come” is 100% false, consistent marketing is a must, and networking is crucial. Forcing myself into the networking scene was tough, but I’ve made some great business connections and genuine friendships.

Three distinct tips I always have for brand-new business owners:

Expect Support from Unexpected Places: People from your past might pop up to support you once you’re “on.” Your gut might say eye roll, but either ignore them or give them a sincere thanks. People do change, and new relationships can form.

Take Advice from the Right People: Don’t take advice from those without expertise in your field. Would I tell a lifeguard how to do their job when I can’t swim? Of course not! Stick to advice from those who are already where you want to be.

Master Your Strengths: Jack of all trades, master of none. Would you say you’re the best screenprinter, accountant, social media manager, copywriter, model, etc.? All at the same time? Probably not. Focus on mastering a few things, not everything. Understand all aspects of your business but hone in on your strengths for the best results.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Three of Swords?
1. What sets Three of Swords apart from anything else is its deep connection to my identity. As a woman of color, I ensure that my brand showcases not only me, but people who look like my friends, family, partners, neighbors, etc. My collections feature POC models, and we highlight alternative POC musicians, models, and film directors on our blog and social media. I’m vocal about what I support and use my platform to celebrate diverse alt beauty and strength.

2. Comfort is just as crucial as aesthetic. While I’m obsessed with the trad goth look, I’m all about cozy, wearable pieces that fit seamlessly into everyday life. You won’t see lace-up leather contraptions here—our designs are perfect for showing off your true self in class, on vacation, or at your fave local show.

What are your plans for the future?
Such a cliche response, but my biggest 2024 plans cannot be revealed right now! Think (ethical) overseas production, new silhouettes and fabrics. When I say Three of Swords is growing, I truly mean it.
