Meet Apoc Krysis of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Apoc Krysis.

Hi Apoc , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always loved music but didn’t know I would become an artist. I would freestyle at parties when I was in high school and my friends would be like “no man you’re really good at this you should make some actual tracks”. I recorded some early tracks using a PS2 microphone and uploaded them on SoundCloud. Later on my family found out and got me a real microphone and a “maschine” for making beats. Musically, 90’s Rap specifically from the south was my biggest inspiration for my early sound and to this day. I worked at my craft for several years self taught and the rest is history., but that support from my family and friends ment everything.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
If I said it was/is easy I would be lying. The biggest obstacles you face with any sort of creative endeavor as a career are “how do I support myself”, “how do I actually make money from this passion project”. Outside of that, everything around you is constantly in a state of change where you have to change with it or start the change yourself to be ahead of the curve. It truly takes a dedication that not everyone is ready for. Because I love what I do I’ll take the ups and downs in order to continue doing it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I rap, produce, ghostwrite, manage artists etc. you can say I’m a jack of all trades but I’m a rapper and performer before anything. I love to do these shows and see the crowds reaction, connect with them, see what they really think of the music. It’s one thing to get a few fire emojis online but it’s a whole different feeling to have a crowd in the moment with you. I’ve performed all over the states and hope to take it even further soon. Outside of that I have a huge appreciation for physical media. Cassettes, cds, vinyls all were a huge part of my childhood. I would post up and just read the insert of a rap album over and over again see who was involved with it, who published it etc. nothing was a small detail to me. That’s why I release all my albums in some sort of physical form. I’ve dubbed at least 1,000 cassettes by hand so far. I’d say what gives me an advantage is how much of my music is done solely by me from the art down to the beats. That being said, I love collaboration and it feels even more impactful to work with other artists. That’s why I started a collective and independent label called MIND YO GULL (MYG for short).

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I had a good childhood so it’s hard to choose, it’s a good problem to have lol. Vacations with my family is what I look back on the most.
