Today we’d like to introduce you to April Rogerson.
April, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
So let’s start from the beginning – How does a young girl growing up in one of the toughest projects in Brooklyn to a teenage mother, end up in Atlanta?
Growing up, I learned pretty early on that I NEEDED to have a plan, make a plan, execute a plan to GET OUT of there! I knew for a fact that my mom was very likely overwhelmed with three of us at 18 years old, and she didn’t have a definitive plan for herself, let alone little ole me. My dad, while in my life, in the beginning, ran into some issues and we lost contact for years when I was around nine years old – it’s fairly safe to say – he DEFINITELY didn’t have a plan for me. My family, in general, were all pretty smart and fairly close and helped my mom in raising us. But everyone was living their own lives, trying to keep their heads above water and keep us out of trouble. And me, I knew I needed a way to get out
I started mapping out my life at 8-9 years old. I KNEW at that age that I was going to excel in my education, I was going to move out on my own at 18 years old, go to college, graduate, become a teacher, and get married and have my first child by 26 years old, and then become a stay at home mom.
I had a life map – but I’ve ALWAYS remained open to whatever PATHS opened to me. I didn’t hold fast to my map. I followed the paths that OPENED up to me.
So the first path that opened to me – instead of become a teacher, I became a Social Worker. I wanted to help people. When I relocated to Atlanta – I went back to school – cosmetology school! I went on to open my own small salon. I found that I was able to help people in ways that I never imagined being a stylist could achieve. From there, a family friend had become a Realtor, his business was excelling and he needed assistance. I became his assistant, while simultaneously running my salon. Things happened that we parted ways while I was in Real Estate school. I had all intentions of working with him until infinity!
I went on to start my own Real Estate career. NONE of these twists or turns were on my MAP. But I was open to my PATH! Because I referred all of my friends and family to my former boss, I didn’t have any leads. I began marketing on Facebook to get clients. I quickly began to get clients, but I also realize how many people were completely naive to buying or selling a home. I began to insert my social work experience in how I ran my business. I truly enjoy helping people and simplifying the process for my clients.
This spurred me to launch my #TOP100 home buying and selling program. My goal is to create 100 homeowners in 2019! The perfect candidate is someone who has always dreamed of homeownership and didn’t know where to start, would benefit from having their very own Homeownership Coach, and are motivated to achieve their goals. At the end of the year we will host a gala to celebrate, giving awards for The Youngest 1st Time home buyer, the Golden Award for the oldest first time home buyer, the Maverick for the person that had to overcome in order to achieve their goal – among other awards and goodies!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
One of the biggest challenges for me was changing Brokerages in 2018 along with the changing real estate market. Revamping my business and also dealing with the low inventory made it difficult. Multiple offer situations and trying to explain to buyers why buying a home was so stressful. I had one woman call me from Zillow; she just started crying because she was having such a hard time finding a home and getting her offer accepted. Happily, I was able to help her and she closed on what she deemed was her dream home!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I work for Century 21 Realty. I am very active in my community. I specialize in utilizing my social work background in meeting my client needs that usually expand beyond buying and selling a home. Potential home buyers and sellers have a myriad of reasons that play a role in why they are looking to buy or sell a home. Addressing those issues/reasons play an integral role in how I interact with my clients. And I have Pink Hair – TODAY! 🙂
What were you like growing up?
Growing up I’ve always been very self-driven. I set goals and go all out to achieve them. I worked hard for extra credit in school, I was a competitive athlete and I hate for anyone to tell me I can’t do something.
