Meet Arcissa Jackson of Harajuku Tattoo in Jacksonville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Arcissa Jackson.

Arcissa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My name is Arcissa Jackson. I am a professional tattoo artist, designer, and muralist at Harajuku Tattoo. I was born in Japan, and my art is heavily influenced by kawaii culture (the Japanese word for “cute”) , “magical girl” aesthetics, and ultra-feminine designs. Harajuku Tattoo was established in 2017, 2 years after I completed my 2nd tattoo apprenticeship in Jacksonville, FL. Harajuku Tattoo is the first tattoo shop owned by a queer black woman in Northeast Florida.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I started tattooing when I was 17 in 2007 and didn’t come back to tattooing until I was 24 after working at over 60 jobs looking for my calling. Since 2014, I have faced and overcome many obstacles in the male-dominated industry of tattooing ranging from racial discrimination, sexual harassment, and homelessness.

Please tell us about your business.
Harajuku Tattoo is more than just a tattoo shop. It is an experience. With its brightly colored rooms and murals, you’re instantly transported to an adorable rainbow dimension, much like her signature tattoo designs, known for sparkling accents, prismatic color palettes, and bold linework. Arcissa specializes in custom feminine, “Kawaii” (Japanese for cute), glittery, jeweled, and neokawaii designs. Harajuku Tattoo carved a completely unique niche in the tattoo world.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would not have waited six years after finishing my first apprenticeship to come back to tattooing in 2014. I had over 60 jobs before realizing that I had found my calling when I was 17.
