Meet Armelia Cartier

Today we’d like to introduce you to Armelia Cartier.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Initially my plans were to become an attorney after completing college in Los Angeles, however those plans never materialized. Instead I turned my focus to one of my favorite hobbies……acting.

Acting allows me to successfully portray the character or characters on stage, tv, and film which I would never be in real life……attorney, politician, superhero. Lol.Today I am still striving for those character roles, but this time as a professional actress in Atlanta.

Has it been a smooth road?
A smooth road and I have never been formally acquainted. I may not have held my hand high enough for it to see me in the classroom and accept me into its tribe!

Now “struggle” personally walked up and introduced itself LOUDLY as a lifetime teacher, said there are no shortcuts in the class, there are tests almost everyday, and I could NEVER transfer from its class. I learned that struggle never leaves….only evolves.

Peaks, valleys, highs, lows, red carpets, and your own carpet. By far the best defining teacher of a struggle has been my own carpet because I am the pilot. Some days my navigation might be clouded with what others have said about my acting…….I keep it moving! Some days I experience jetlag from countless auditions, table reads, script analysis, and dizzying performances……I keep it moving! Some days I fly on empty with no fuel and no reserve because I am consumed with the varying degrees of how to keep the lights on but I keep it moving. Keep it moving because you can’t cheat your struggle or skip your struggle.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
As a poet, activist, and actress I love every opportunity afforded to me to share stories written, narrated, and portrayed on a beautiful canvas that is “us”.

As a poet, I write to heal the culture and community. (I hope to perform in September at the National Black Female of Music Executives event).

As an actor, I act to heal myself. (I was recently featured in the indie short about sex trafficking “Dark Currency”. Also I recently selected as an actor to be a part of Decatur Dinners, a series of one actor plays, where Decatur residents are brought together to engage in conversations about race and equity.

As an activist, I fight to heal the world. (Currently, I work/volunteer with Positive Growth, Inc, Hosea Helps, Positive American Youth, and the Hank Stewart Foundation.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
A city with undeniable Southern roots, Atlanta provides you the opportunity to excel and thrive in technology, small business, entrepreneurship, entertainment, sports, and fortune 500 companies. Plus on any given day you may run into a number of celebrities…….the aquamarine “celebrities” at the world’s largest aquarium that is. 🙂

The thing I like least in our city is the traffic!
