Today we’d like to introduce you to Arnold Leung.
Arnold, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started this company while I was at University in 2007, hired two friends of mine who are actually still with the company to this day, and we started providing web development services to small businesses and companies. Over time we identified Drupal as being a platform of choice to build websites on for customers. It was that choice that has really helped shaped the technology decisions that have guided the services we have provided ever since. Today, we at Appnovation, choose to provide services (strategy, development, integration, support, etc.) around technologies that commercially supported, open technologies, meaning they are open to integration and provide open access to data.
Another aspect that has really helped shaped where we have gotten to as company would have to be the people that have been part of Appnovation. Hiring good, quality hardworking people has been paramount, especially for a services business. Without its people, Appnovation would not have gotten to where it is today.
Has it been a smooth road?
Oh, there have been challenges for sure, but overcoming those challenges has certainly been a rewarding experience and have definitely helped me grow both personally and professionally. Two of our biggest challenges as of late that come to mind are dealing with scalability and globalization, and in actuality both of those challenges go hand in hand with one another.
Trying to scale our teams of experts across a variety of technologies and service lines is one thing, but we also have to scale all the support services that maintain those teams such as human resources, sales, marketing, accounting, operations etc. In dealing with scale we are also trying to constantly keep both our clients and professionals happy, all the while maintaining a healthy balance sheet and strong growth.
Globalization of Appnovation has presented its own set of challenges, some of which are derived from scaling, but additional ones such as dealing with foreign government regulations, time zone challenges and communications to name just a few. As a company with 15 offices in 6 different countries across 3 continents it is not hard to imagine that trying to do everything we want to, when we want to can be tough, but figuring things out as team is what in the end has made this whole experience for me so rewarding.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We have five core values that were established roughly five years ago that we as a company subscribe to. They are Growth, Openness, Innovation, Customer Satisfaction and Teamwork.
Everything we do as a company starts with our people so when hiring, we look for people who will fit with these values and will buy in to what we are trying to do as a company.
As far as our brand goes, we actually recently rebranded Appnovation. To put simply Appnovation and what we do can now be summed up in three words. Open Digital Delivered. “Open” is for the types of technologies we provide services around, meaning they are open to integration and provide open access to data. “Digital” refers to the types of experiences we strategize, build and support for our customers. The word “Delivered” references the fact that we at Appnovation get stuff done for our clients. We are a reliable and innovative solutions provider who is confident in the services we provide our customers.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Two things stick out in my mind. First, we see clients looking more and more for a one stop shop that can “do it all” so to speak so they don’t have to go to multiple vendors to build what they want.
Second, I would say that companies in the future will be wanting more and more to have things built that are omni-channel, multi-touch and fully integrated digital experiences that do a great job of capturing as much data as possible that can then.
