Today we’d like to introduce you to Arthur Powell.
Arthur, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been involved in Mixed Martial Arts, off and on, since the age of 11 years old. I could never truly commit myself to MMA because of my family not be stable, relocating, joining a gang at 15 and being involved with criminal activity; until I finally went to prison and served 11 and half years in the Georgia prison system.
Upon my release, I decided to do the things I love doing to help make me a better man and mixed martial arts is one of them. So I’ve been doing mixed martial arts full time for seven years now in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai Boxing. I always wanted to teach and recently opened a gym called “EGRESS MMA Training Center” under my Professor Israel Gomes association called, “American Killer Bees Headquarters.” I love MMA and what my Professor Israel Gomes and another professor he assigned to me, David Robins, have taught me! The discipline has made me a much better person and helps me look at positive ways to resolve conflict and I want to pass it on to others.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road! This is actually my second time at gym ownership. I tried to open my gym back in 2018 and failed. I spent a few thousand dollars securing the building, buying mats, gym software, etc. based on verbal agreements and nothing contractual from possible business partners/investors who didn’t keep their word and I got in over my head. This time around, I was smarter; I had already established some clients and was better off financially to take the risk to move forward in making my dream a reality!
EGRESS MMA Training Center – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My company is called EGRESS MMA Training Center. We train our clients in cardio and calisthenics workouts, strength and conditioning, cardio kickboxing, Muay Thai Boxing, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I’m known for winning Gold in NAGA and AGF Championships, Bronze in Atlanta Winter International Open IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship. What I’m proud of and what sets us apart from other gyms is we’re very hands-on and accessible for our client’s needs and we push them to give their very best!!!
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I’ve always seek knowledge and love to research things because I had a lot of questions. I studied people and questioned everything because I didn’t trust people. If things didn’t add up or sounded questionable, I researched it to find out for myself.
