Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashlee Barrios.
Ashlee, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always been an artist since I can remember… No matter what job I worked I always introduced myself as an artist. If I met new people and hobbies were mentioned… art was always at the top of my list and I was loud about it. I tried all different types of art and tattooing just stuck. I went to school for art but never imagined myself being a tattoo artist. I didn’t really know it was a “real job”. Oh, but it is and it changed my entire life.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not. I had business partnerships turned sour during my maternity leave, slow seasons, mistakes, fights, tears… you name it. But all worth it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize mostly in neotraditional and illustrative tattooing. I also pierce and apply tooth gems. I am most proud of owning my own tattoo shop. I am the only Latina owned tattoo shop in Staten island. I also designed and poured my own resin epoxy flooring.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck is what you make it. I worked hard for everything I have.
