Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Ashley Herbert.
Dr. Herbert, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I decided to open my own veterinary practice because I wanted to be able to provide top notch veterinary care to people in under serviced communities. I came up with this business plan that was very inclusive of the neighborhood. My goal was to offer not only veterinary services, but educational services to help the community better care for its pets. In the first year, we had a free weekly puppy training class, as well as several community events, including a vaccine clinic. I have made it my goal to continue to be a part of this community. We have also sponsored several neighborhood events, including the Tour of Homes, and Atlanta Streets Alive (as a route host). My staff and I have built a great rapport with our neighbors, and they have been very grateful for our services.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has not been smooth! I faced a lot of adversity with trying to find lending to make my dream a reality. I also had issues during the construction process with the city. I purchased a standing building that had not had any renovations, so there were issues with mold and asbestos. The project took about 3-4 months longer than expected, and went over budget, but I was able to get everything done and open in December of 2015!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with West End Animal Wellness Center – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am a general practice veterinarian who treats dogs and cats. I don’t have a “specialty degree,” but I do love internal medicine and surgery. My specialty is dealing with clients. I find ways to break medical terms down into scenarios that they can understand. I take great pride in being able to relate to clients and educate them so that they have all the information they need to make informed decisions. This is what sets me apart from other veterinarians.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I plan on expanding my existing building so that we have boarding and day care here at the practice. I also plan on adding grooming services. I also want to continue to do more outreach and eventually start a nonprofit organization to continue to help the people of West End.
