Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Smith.
Hi Ashley, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Since I was a child, writing has been a passion of mine that I’ve enjoyed. It was a way I could be creative. As I got older, my love for storytelling grew, and I wanted to share my creativity with the world and become an author. It was important to me that my first book was impactful, inspirational, and motivational. I always had a soft spot for children, so I decided to create books for kids. As a result, I wrote Makayla’s Blues Children’s Book series to inspire children to be the best they can be. So far, I’ve attended several schools to read to children, read virtually online, been interviewed by several news outlets and blogs, and toured as an author in Mississippi and Georgia. It has been gratifying, and I receive a lot of support.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been severely bumpy. There were a lot of challenges along the way. The biggest challenge I faced was deciding to be my editor. I didn’t have the money to hire an editor and illustrator, so I told myself that wouldn’t be what would end my journey; I would do it myself. I am most proud of how I pushed myself to be the powerhouse I am today. I am the writer, the editor, the designer, the promoter, the website builder, the speaker, you name it. I am my brand. Although it isn’t easy, I feel it’s well worth it, and I would tell anyone dedicated to becoming an author to remain focused and learn what they can on their own and push through.

Makayla’s Book World was founded in the year 2020. It is a children’s brand with books and apparel that motivates children to never give up on their dreams. Each book takes the reader on a magical journey that requires the protagonist to believe in themselves and figure out how to achieve their goal. I incorporated hip-hop culture to tell fun and exciting stories for kids to read. The apparel is the perfect pairing for children to feel even more connected to their favorite characters from the books. I also travel to different children’s functions to read and meet children. I believe I am most proud of how many kids have become a fan of Makayla’s stories. We’ve sold many copies independently. I am happy that my books are relatable to kids and they feel inspired by reading them.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
To have a successful business, I believe you have to take risks. As a creator, I spend a lot on visuals, advertisement, marketing, inventory, etc. Sometimes you’ll see. a return, and sometimes you won’t. But I would take risks that reflect precisely how I envision my business growing rather than playing it safe. We only live once. Go for it.
