Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashton Taylor.
Hi Ashton, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
During high school, I became interested in photography, mainly self-portraits. My family was supportive of this and got me a camera! Since 2012, I have been photographing different subjects – people, nature, animals, events, and architecture. In the beginning, I wore out my sister and best friend using them as my muses.
My main focus is creative/editorial portraiture. I enjoy finding cool locations, thrifting for outfits and shooting amazing models. My editing style has definitely developed over the years. At one point, I enjoyed dark content and moody editing. Now, I have still kept my moody roots but incorporate unique and colorful tones. I have definitely found my own style.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. To be honest, I struggle with depression and bipolar. At one point, I had to take a break from photography, I thought I lost the passion for it, but I was clouded with depression. I am thankful I pushed through that part in my life because photography brings me so much joy!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in creative and editorial portraiture. My go-to lens is a 24-70mm, I love the wide-angle look. I enjoy shooting at a low angle to create a cool composition with the wide-angle lens. I have also experimented with a fish eye lens, which brings a unique look to my portraits.
I mainly shoot in natural light. I especially love shooting in harsh light, which most photographers stay away from. I love how sunlight looks on different skin. Although recently, I’ve enjoyed playing with strobes and also shooting film.
Each shoot I create has a theme, and I find clothing and props to fit that theme. I typically source everything myself while also working with the model and her/his ideas.
My editing style has a touch of moodiness while still being colorful and clean. I also edit to fit the theme of the shoot, whether it calls for black and white or colorful composites.
I think what sets me apart from others is my editing style and the angles I capture. I am most proud of being able to capture exactly what I envision for each shoot.
How do you think about happiness?
Seeing the final product of each shoot makes me happy. All of that hard work and creativity is showcased in the final images. I am quite proud of the work I produce, although there is always room for improvement.
Also, being on set and in the moment fills me with joy. I feel such a sense of accomplishment once a shoot is finished.
