Today we’d like to introduce you to Aspen Martin.
Aspen, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Well…my story starts off back when I was at least eight years old. I was in my church’s youth choir and our choir director singled me out in a group of like 20 kids to do a solo lol, and when it came and went… I realized I wanted to do this for real. I was a huge Anita Baker, Jay-Z, and Will Smith fan growing up and I wanted to make music like them. So fast forward to 2015 while I was living in Atlanta, I just graduated from The Atlanta Institute of Music a year prior and I had one of the worst breakups in my life, I lost my apartment in Gwinnett county, I was ready and willing to live out of my car cause I was THAT hungry to make it. (Still am) But by the grace of God above some of my family members stepped in and allowed me to move in for a while, but… Internally, I just shut down from everyone into a reclusive state.
So to cope with the pain of where I was at mentally… I put myself in a booth and just let it all out. Then in 2016, I dropped my first serious project called “Relapse” and since then I got my first single “End Of Discussion” on to radio in 25+ different markets across the U.S., ALSO ALSO. I was the first artist from Savannah since the late great Camouflage to be on national rotation. I’ve opened for acts such as Plies, DaBaby, and 112 to name a few, went on a mini-tour across the South East, got my single on the “Music Choice” network. I went to NYC to meet with a few labels I also dropped a new single “Whole Thing” featuring Pote Baby and now I’m gearing up for my newest project titled: “Everything Or Nothing” releasing Jan 15th.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Lol is water dry? No lol, not at all. It’s been rough yet rewarding, emotionally and mentally draining but it brought out the very best of me at times. I lost friendships, relationships, for a whole year I was not even able to see my family because I was working so hard. I was around people who I thought WOULD NEVER turn their back on me and did just that! There were times I would get in a rut where I couldn’t write, some of my performances were not the best and I would become stuck. It took a lot and I do mean ALOT of self-reflecting and prayer to get myself back in the driver seat and take control of my destiny. I lost my apartment in 2015, moved in with my cousins on the westside of Atlanta, I watched my cousin pass away in front of me due to sickle cell anemia when I was living in Atlanta, which ultimately made me move back home to Savannah back in 2016. (R.I.P. Carmen. You are forever loved and remembered.)
I also remember back in the summer of 2015, I went to a mixer for artists and songwriters to display their talent. So that we could network amongst ourselves. I weighed around 250 lbs at the time, I didn’t dress like the other artists that were there,(cause I could not fit in the clothes I liked…go figure) and when I was called up to play some of my music… People were walking out! I saw some of their faces and heard a few people laughing underneath their breath saying (Ill keep it PG lol) “This man ain’t got nothin bruh” or my favorite “Wtf this dude got going on?! Buddy wasting our time like for real.” When I pressed play people stopped dead in their tracks, everyone that walked out of the room was LITERALLY rushing back to get in. Next thing you know people giving me their numbers trying to link up with me to work on songs, write songs for them, and help them produce a song from top to bottom. Crazy times looking back at it lol. It taught me that image is EXTREMELY important for an artist, people can be fickle, and to never judge a book by its cover.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Never Enough story. Tell us more about the business.
Never Enough is my production company where I drop my music under. We take care of registering songs to publishing companies, uploading music to major streaming services, (Apple Music, itunes, Google Play, Spotify, Tidal)
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
No such thing as luck.
