Meet Asya Washum of The Uncommon Life in Cobb County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Asya Washum.

Asya, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a wife and mother of four children. I am originally from New Jersey however, I moved to Atlanta when I was 14, so in many ways, Atlanta is my home. I graduated from Osborne High School in Marietta and went on to graduate from college with a Bachelors of Arts in Sales and Marketing. I’ve had an extensive career in both the corporate sector as well as in entrepreneurship.

I am passionate about community building and supporting women in remembering their power and reclaiming the essence of who they are. I’ve had such a unique life filled with highs and lows but each step and stage has led to the person that I am today. My goal in life is to consistently grow, learn, and transform into the best version of myself. In fulfilling this goal, I know that I will be encouraged not only my three daughters and son but also those who are watching my journey to do the same.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My journey has been anything but smooth. I am at a point in my life where I embrace the challenges because I know that they are necessary for my life’s journey. The challenges and obstacles that I face are to teach me, broaden my perspective, and empower me to teach others how to face and overcome challenges.

One of the greatest challenges that I have had to face was the passing of my sister Iman in 2011. It was challenging because she simply went to sleep at 21 and didn’t wake up. Although this was a challenge, and one of the most difficult things that I’ve faced in my life it lead me on a journey of faith, healing, and restoration. It was the darkest period of my life, but it was one of the greatest gifts as well.

Please tell us about The Uncommon Life.
My business is The Uncommon Life which is a lifestyle brand and online boutique. I created The Uncommon Life as a space for women who are mothers and wives to grow, heal, and cultivate themselves as a whole woman. Many times, once we become mothers and wives, we begin to lose our identity and individuality so, we at The Uncommon Life challenge that. Originally, I created this space because it was a space that I needed. I remember someone asking me “Who is Asya?” and unfortunately, I wasn’t able to answer the question. I could answer the roles that I currently have, of course, such as being an entrepreneur, mother, wife, but, I couldn’t answer who I was at my core. This led to deep exploration, healing, and cultivating myself as an individual. I am still in the process of this exploration, but the more I began to discuss it with other women with similar roles I knew there was a need for this space.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Not one thing! I believe that everything happens exactly as it should to assist in the next phase. I make mistakes because there is a lesson that I need to learn. Learning those lessons help me grow and become wiser for the next phase of my journey.

I have no regrets!
