Today we’d like to introduce you to Kidd Fielteau.
Kidd, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I first got started with photography as a hobby back in 2011 and didn’t really start to take it serious until the following year. When I first started shooting I had no idea what I was doing, I had no idea what an f-stop or shutter speed even meant, but every bit of free time I had at the time I would try to learn something new about my camera and about photography.
Has it been a smooth road?
In the first two years when I started, I would say the thing that was a bit of a struggle was trying to find models who would want to work with me. It was like one of those crazy loops where if you want a strong portfolio you will need strong models, but you can’t get strong models if you don’t have a strong portfolio. My workaround to that was just Shooting and filling my portfolio with my beautiful wife and just practicing on her as much as possible until I started to get moderately better at what I was doing.
Have you ever wanted to stop doing what you do and just start over?
There were a few times in the beginning that I felt like giving up. It mainly came from looking at other established photographers whose work were way out of my league and me being a first-year photographer trying to compare myself to them. Another difficult moment as striving to make photography my full-time job is when there are days, weeks, or even a month when you have no clients or steady income. If it wasn’t for my wife and her support and always believing in me I don’t think I would have made it to where I am now.
Let’s change gears – is there any advice you’d like to give?
My first advice I would give to any photographer out there is to shoot what you love and love what you shoot. It is so easy to get caught up in trying to do what everyone else is doing or even just trying to make a quick buck, but if you enjoy what you do the money will come. And my second bit of advice is you cannot do everything yourself, but build a strong core team that has the same goals as you. I know I could not have done it without my hair stylist, Denise McKinley, and wife, fashion designer Tabitha Fielteau.
What are you most excited about these days?
On a personal level, I am just excited I get to wake up everyday and share those days with my wife and 3 kids because without them I would not be the man I am today. And on a professional level, I am excited to be at the point in my career where more of my work is being published in magazines and seeing all of my hard work pay off.
