Meet Atlanta Fashion Designer: Shanice Wright

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanice Wright.

Shanice, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have been a creative person my entire life. However, It wasn’t until I went to college when I realized that I wanted to be a Fashion Designer. When I arrived at Clark Atlanta University in Fall 2012 I was a Mass Media Arts major. During my sophomore year, I decided to change my major to Fashion Design. I did not know how to sew at all before I changed my major. I just knew that designing was my purpose on earth. I’m glad I followed my passion because now I know how to sew, create patterns, sketch and so much more. It is now two years later and I have created my first Fall/Winter collection and help produce Clark Atlanta University Spring Fashion Show the last two years. Thanks to my Professors, Colleagues and Supporters, I will not be the designer I am today.

Has it been a smooth road?
Being a designer has definitely not been a smooth road. I had to experience sleepless nights, self-doubt and harsh criticism. However, these challenges have shaped me into a better designer.

When you look back, can you point to a period when you wanted to quit or a period that was really frustrating?
Yes all the time! Especially when you have to redo a garment over and over again until it’s perfect. But seeing the finished garment, outfit or accessory is what keep me motivated.

What advice do you wish to give to those thinking about pursuing a path similar to yours?
My advice is to NEVER give up and to always believe in yourself and your ideas. Being a Fashion Designer will be hard but it will definitely be worth it.

Is there something you are particularly excited about or working towards?
What I am most excited about my future professionally and personally is the challenges I have yet to overcome. Yes, that sounds a little weird but those challenges will end up making me the best I ever been as a Designer.
